The reason I would like to be welfare secretary is due to the experiences I have had at this club. Rugby as a society is very notorious for being overboard and doing too much, which when joining made me really apprehensive because I wanted to play but not at the cost of doing things I really didn’t want to do. The role of welfare secretary made it very clear to me that this wasn’t something that needed to be done; I could enjoy my rugby and the socials without crossing any lines as well as there being someone senior who I can speak to ridding me of any worries. As someone who spoke to the welfare secretary a lot I was able to gain a great understanding of how helpful it was for many freshers, and subsequently the apprehensive feeling is something I would heavily empathise with making it much easier for me to build a relationship with the freshers in particular. I have had previous experience in a role like this; being part of school counselling team dealing with the concerns that pupils had and raised them to the higher ups in school. I’ve done counselling before; every term meeting with new boys that had just joined the school helping them alleviate any worries they wouldn’t necessarily go to a member of staff about. I was fortunate enough to complete a coaching course in which I put to practice, mentoring boys younger than me through any issue they had at school. Within the club I feel I have made many friends whether that be senior or freshers and I believe that is a testament to my friendly and outgoing nature allowing me to really buy into the club. I am willing to go above and beyond with this role as I would be willing to help join in with the freshers sessions and coach as well; I believe this is important as the more familiar the boys are with the welfare secretary the more likely they will be to come to me to say how they feel and I this was something that I witnessed first hand this year. I hope the qualities I have highlighted make me a suitable candidate for the role.
