I’m eager to be running for Shadowing Scheme Coordinator after having taken part in the scheme this year. I’ve seen firsthand how valuable it can be in shaping students’ understanding of surgery and building meaningful connections with clinicians.

Due to my interest in general surgery, I was paired with a colorectal surgeon. Through regular contact and shadowing opportunities, I gained not only clinical insight but also invaluable mentorship. He supported me with advice, career guidance, and even helped me with my application to the EXSEL scheme. This experience has been a key part of developing my enthusiasm and confidence when it comes to surgery.

Because of this, I’m motivated to ensure that future students have equally rewarding experiences. I understand the importance of matching students thoughtfully to mentors, maintaining good communication throughout the year, and ensuring both students and surgeons feel engaged and supported.

I have strong organisational skills and feel confident in managing communication with mentors over the summer, coordinating pairings efficiently, and regularly checking in to ensure the scheme runs smoothly.

If elected, I would also look to build on the scheme by encouraging more interaction between mentors and students, including optional events to strengthen these connections and enhance the overall experience.
