Hi, my name’s Isla and I’m running to be your second year rep for cutting edge next year.

I’d like to become a part of the cutting edge committee as I have a keen interest in surgery, in particular trauma and orthopaedics, and I would love to play a role in improving surgical opportunities for students in the pre-clinical years. As someone who is currently undergoing a surgical placement, I think it is important for students to gain some knowledge of surgery in their pre-clinical years, in order to get the most out of their surgical placements.


If elected to this role, these are some of the initiatives that I would like to build on/ introduce:

- Run more anatomy workshops, particularly focusing on how surgery can relate to anatomy.
- Using the network of surgeons that cutting edge currently has to arrange more shadowing opportunities for students in the preclinical years, especially as not everyone gets to experience a good surgical placement in these years.
- Working with the older years in cutting edge and current F1/2s and surgical trainees to put on ‘What you should be doing to become a surgeon’. This would give students an opportunity in both the pre-clinical and clinical years to see the kinds of projects/ super-curricular activities they could participate in in order to start to build a strong portfolio.
- I also want to give students in pre-clinical years the opportunity to gain some teaching experience. This would involve enlisting second year students to run anatomy/ revision sessions for first years, and working with the outreach officer to give students in both pre-clinical years to gain teaching opportunities in schools.

Hi, I’m Zara, and I’m running to be your Second Year Surgical Representative.

Second year is where our interest in surgery becomes more real. We’re in clinical environments more often—but many of us still aren’t sure how to make the most of these opportunities. Moving from observing in theatre to actively engaging can feel unclear.

If elected, I want to make this transition easier by improving the accessibility and usefulness of surgical society initiatives.



This will include:

Making theatre time count on placement - through guidance on learning actively in theatre including scrub workshops and tailored anatomy sessions
Building skills - introducing more suturing workshops, so everyone can develop and expand their practical skills, regardless of experience
Understanding your next steps - talks with junior doctors who can offer realistic, relatable advice on next steps in the surgical training pathway and simple ways to start building a portfolio without it feeling overwhelming


Finally, I want to be part of a society that supports both academic and social events, helping students build connections with peers who share interests. Through inclusive socials and informal events, I want to help you find not just opportunities, but your community.

Hi, I'm Naeha (currently a 1st Year student)

I would like to apply for the role of Year 2 pre-clinical rep for Cutting Edge Society. Over the past year, I have really enjoyed being involved in the society and it has given me many opportunities to explore my interest in surgery outside of the medical school curriculum. I particularly enjoyed attending the suturing workshops, which was both fun and useful, as well as the range of events organised throughout the year.

I believe I would be well suited to this role because I am enthusiastic, approachable and willing to get involved wherever needed. I enjoy working as part of a team and would be happy helping organise and run events smoothly, including larger events such as the annual conference. I would also like to help create more opportunities specifically aimed at preclinical students, particularly around anatomy teaching and revision support during exam season. For example, I think informal anatomy crash courses or revision sessions led by second years for first years could be really beneficial and help make the transition into medical school less overwhelming.

As someone who has experienced the first preclinical year myself, I understand what students find most useful and engaging. Although I understand there are limits to what can be done as a second year student, I would be committed to contributing ideas, supporting the committee, and helping make the society as useful, inclusive and enjoyable as possible for everyone interested in surgery.
