Water polo captains have the responsibility of running training and sessions. These sessions should accommodate for all capabilities and be planned and structured in advance to make the most of the time we have in the pool.
Although the captain does not necessarily have to be the best player in the team, they should have a good understanding of the sport. They should be able to lead the team in matches, using tactics practiced in training.
It is important that the rest of the team listen to and respect the captain. The captain should be friendly and approachable and be committed to the club and team, attending as many sessions as possible if not all of them. They should also organise attendance to any strength and conditioning session the team has available to them.
The captain and vice-captain should also try to arrange friendlies with teams nearby.
A good relationship with the vice-captain is important to ensure referees and coaches are booked in advance and for home games, captains should print off the BUCS team sheet before the match for both teams to fill in.
After each match, the captain must enter the scoreline onto BUCS as well as upload the team sheets. Writing a brief synopsis of each game would also be good for the media sec to use and can be a good way to give feedback to the squad and make team members feel appreciated.
The captain, along with the vice captain, must organise a few socials for the squad for team building purposes.
It is important to work closely with the coaching scholars(/official coach if one is found) in order to use their expertise to further the squads development as much as possible.
