Your main job is to organise matches for your respective teams. BUCS fixture dates are predetermined and organised by the union. Referees (H) and coaches (A) should be arranged as soon as fixtures are announced to ensure all matches can be played without issue (a few weeks prior). Good communication with the BUCS coordinator (Chelsi-lee parker in activities) is vital and should be your primary contact in case of any BUCS issues. It is also your responsibility to make sure the referees get paid each time they referee (ask previous VC/C for referee invoice forms).

It is also vital to arrange friendly fixtures with other local universities to get more players game time and help the 2nd teams/development squads. This requires you to liaise with the other teams in your league and organise the fixture dates throughout the year, these should fit around BUCS matches and take place during allocated pool time. Good communication between both M/F Vice-Captains is essential to avoid overlap and double bookings and help share the workload. It is essential to have constant awareness of the match agenda and remain organised with emails and communications with the Edge, the union and other university secretaries.

It is also useful to form a good relationship with your captain so you can help each other with decisions and share some responsibilities where necessary. While the captain can focus primarily on the technical, water polo side of running the squad the VC should organise social events such as team meals and pub trips etc to help the team bond outside of the pool. The vice-captain can be seen in this respect as a ‘water polo social secretary’.
