Hi, I am Ruby a second year English Literature and Theatre Studies student and your current Publicity Officer for English Society.
I am running for President because I am passionate about this society and want to help ensure that we get the most out of next year!

Why should you vote for me?

1. Experience.
Having been on English Society Committee this year I have a great understanding of the role of President and what needs to be done to keep the well-oiled machine that is our lovely committee going - this is invaluable as President is a big role so it is a good plan to have someone who knows what they are doing! My experience also means that I have built relationships with staff in the School of English - this means better communication between the Eng Soc and the SoE.

2. I really am passionate - I helped re-start this society!
Last year, English Society started off with only two committee members due to elections issues - I was one of them. We helped get English Society back on its feet, which was no mean feat! This meant that our lovely committee were able to put on the events that you have enjoyed this year. The hard work and dedication that I put in to helping re-form the society proves how much I care and therefore how hard I will work at this role.

3. I know you, you know me.
I know what you want. Having communicated with you all this year, whether at English Society Tea, via the weekly email or on one of our socials I have a good grasp of what you want from this society. That means pub nights, club nights and Otley Runs. That also means non-alcoholic events like quizzes, Eng Soc Tea and literature trips. I am open to all ideas - I will be opening my inbox for suggestions of events that you want to see. After all, English Society is for you. After the past two years of pandemic stress and restrictions we all deserve some fun and this is something I can promise you.

4. Communication and community.
Hot take? Degrees are hard. I want English Society to create a stronger sense of community for English students. With online learning continuing this year, it has been harder than ever to meet coursemates. I will make sure that English Society provides a place outside of class to socialise with coursemates, build friendships and break away from uni stress.
I believe that communication is key to all relationships and I want to bring this to role of President. This means that I will make sure that I am available for a chat about what you would like more of from the society. I am prepared to be an active face for English Society and I promise to represent you well - whether by communicating with our English Society interns about academic issues you may have or raising them with the School of English myself.

5. It takes a village.
English Society is not a dictatorship, it is a democracy! All members of committee are crucial which means we all need to work together to make next year the best year yet for our members. Therefore, as President, I will make sure to regularly check-in with the rest of committee and work with our Equality and Diversity Secretary to ensure that everyone feels able to perform their role to the best of their ability.
Happy committee equals happy society.

Hi everyone! I’m Stella and I would like to nominate myself for President of the LUU English Society. I am currently in my first year of study on the BA English and Music course and I would like the opportunity of being President after my experience of the English Society this year.

I believe my skills and experience will help me to be an effective President, as I have participated in the English Society but also been a committed member of LUUMS which has afforded me a broad understanding of what makes a successful university society.

Previously, I have managed a music group at my Sixth Form, and I believe that has provided me with the organisation, planning and creative skills necessary to effectively run the English Society. In addition, I have volunteered and been an NCS Team Leader which involved organising lots of trips and meetings with various stakeholders; meaning I would be perfectly capable of meeting the demands of being President while also liaising with other members of the Exec.

I would like to run for President to contribute to my experience of a warm and welcoming society which is accessible to new and returning students next year. I would also like to provide fun and exciting opportunities for English Society members with a variety of different activities planned in order to boost engagement with the whole English cohort.

In this role, I would start the year with various activities such as a fresher’s week welcome event, a themed Otley Run and some non-drinking activities like a trip to Kirkstall Abbey. Other plans include pub quizzes with epic prizes and honouring the annual trip to another city, potentially one abroad. As well as, of course, keeping English Tea going (with the good biscuits too)!

I also promise to foster and create an inclusive and inspiring environment which maintains low membership fees and ensuring that the society remains accessible to all.
