Medicine is difficult and I would like to make it easier on everyone so they can live their life

Sometimes all a person needs is someone to listen carefully, to advocate for you, to push for changes that benefit you, (and others in the same boat).
Having volunteered at a large mental health charity, where many people would describe their struggles with suicide, abuse, physical and mental health, etc, one of the most important things I could do as a volunteer was to listen.

As a result of my experiences, my primary focus is to hear you out, listen to your struggles with medical school, your ideal solutions and results. Through this, my desire is to make you seen in your struggles, to implement changes you desire, regardless of how much resistance there is.

However you want to raise an issue with me, whether it’s through a Microsoft form, physically, over the phone, by email, text, fax machine, or by pigeon, I can assure you that you will have my full support, my full attention, and my complete dedication to the matter. Whether your struggle is big or small, I intend to resolve it for you.

I'm an experienced mediator, having been a hockey captain and umpire,
I deal with things through neutrality, and I am acclimatised to dealing with angry dudes on a pitch, so I possess the skillset to help deal with conflicts you may have with the academic team. In addition to that, as a captain I'm used to putting on inclusive social events for everyone, regardless of their differences. I can also gladly proclaim I have never been done for corruption while being a referee 🔥🔥

Hi I’m Asma, I would love to be your first year MSRC rep and I would like to tell you why you would want me to be part of your student voice.

As your representative and a commuting student, I understand the importance of making sure every student feels heard and recognised. I’ll log and track concerns raised keep students updated on what staff have decided and when changes are expected, and identify recurring issues across the year. At the end of each semester, I’ll compile these into a report to highlight and prioritise the concerns affecting the most students.

Equity in education is also important to me. As an Access to Leeds student, I understand the importance of ensuring students receive the support and resources they need to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. I’d like to create a free resource bank of notes and flashcards from older years, accessible to all Medicine students. I also recognise that personal circumstances can affect more than just our studies and therefore I am always approachable to chat but also offer bi-weekly drop-in sessions in the Meet & Teach rooms, providing a space to listen and help students access appropriate support for their wellbeing.

Accessing opportunities beyond the curriculum is something I want to make easier for all students. As lead of MedSoc in college, I gained experience finding and creating opportunities to support my peers’ skills and professional development. I want to bring this to MSRC through a weekly bulletin highlighting extracurricular, volunteering and research opportunities for Year 1 students. By collecting anonymous feedback we’ll see how accessible and useful these opportunities are to then help make them better for future students.

My name is Sarah and I'm extremely passionate about helping my fellow students to achieve their maximum academic potential, both assessment-wise and in their general health and wellbeing!
My aims as Assessment Rep are detailed in my poster below

Hi! I’m Raya and I’m running to be your first year rep. Medical school can be tough, but I’m hoping to make it easier for us all by voicing your opinions and making positive changes.

Last Year as a Gateway Rep, we were able to implement changes in the course that better reflected what we wanted to learn, and voice our concerns when needed. I am confident that I’ll be able to do the same this year, and make our first year on the MBChB programme one to remember.

Feel free to voice your concerns to me, I’m always willing to help out and find solutions.

I really value the importance of a unifying voice in a student body, and whilst working with MSRC last year, I was involved in positive curriculum reforms by representing students’ opinions and needs.

Alongside this, I have previous experience as a Deputy Head Girl, a Gateway Year Representative and presently one of the Gateway PALS Co-Leads and the Events Coordinator for CMF. Through these positions I have developed skills and qualities needed to be an effective voice for our cohort.

Equality and equity are always a priority to me, so I will always address anyone’s concerns regardless of anything. Aside from this, I am ALWAYS open for a chat, so feel free to come up to me anytime you see me about!

Hopefully, this poster has given you a little idea of who I am and what I’d bring to this role. Whether we’ve already met or are yet to meet, hi I’m Hareem! I’m running to be one of your 1st Year Reps and above all, I want to be an open, approachable voice for our cohort; someone you know and feel comfortable coming to with anything!

As a former Deputy Head Girl, I’m familiar with listening to student concerns, communicating them effectively and working with relevant authorities to find practical solutions. I’d like to bring this experience to Leeds Medical School and act as a strong, reliable link between our cohort, the Year 1 team, MSRC, and Assessment Leads.

As your representative, I would aim to:

➡️Create regular opportunities for anonymous feedback, giving you a comfortable and accessible way to share your views

As the first in my bloodline to attend university and medical school, I understand how unfamiliar and overwhelming the beginnings of the medicine career path can feel. Through my TikTok content creation page sharing my experiences as a medical student, I have gained a lot of confidence in communicating and understanding the struggles and queries many students bring to medical school. I can share these insights and experiences from my platform to this medical school, through being approachable, friendly and ensuring everyone's experiences in this cohort are represented. I am an enthusiastic, sociable person and I would be honoured to bring these traits into this council to make first year of medical school the best it can be.
