I'm excited to announce my candidacy for President. I'm dedicated to enhancing our society's academic and social experiences. I'm committed to representing your interests and making our society the best it can be. I appreciate your support and vote in the upcoming election.

Hello, I am ishanya Singhvi, a second-year economics student. I served as the secretary of the Leeds Economics Society in the academic year 2023-24, therefore acquiring the experience to run the society. I am familiar with the workings of the committee and I aim to give the best experience to the members of the committee and the society in the upcoming year.

Dear Voters of the Leeds Economics Society,

It is with true excitement that I present myself as a candidate for the presidency of our Economics Society. My journey as a student has been defined by a genuine commitment to charity, student empowerment, and a passion for knowledge. I am keen on utilising my experiences to put our society on a path of innovation and excellence as well as developing a vibrant and supportive student culture.

Leeds has a rich background in economics and in honour of that history, I want this upcoming academic year to be one of the defining moments of this society – one that will lay the foundation for a greater Economics Society that is on par with renowned universities around the world. An EconSoc that will last beyond our graduation days. To achieve this vision I need your help. I have outlined my aims and objectives below and hope you can find me worthy of your vote. A quick overview of my credentials:

4) Volunteer for Operation Smile and Red Crescent
5) Founder of my school’s Economics Podcast
6) On placement in London with the Government Economic Service

My aims essentially boil down to four key points: Diversify, Educate, Enhance and Expand. One of my aims is to expand the EconSoc beyond our cohort and include the wider LUU community. It is our duty as not only Economists but as students to encourage conversation, dialogue, and education. To aid this I will introduce flexible memberships and look to introduce ways to win free memberships. I don’t want students to feel as though the society is locked behind a paywall – an important way to ensure this is my objective to secure more funding through fundraisers and Sponsors for our society, hoping to introduce a dual effect by giving members access to discounts and experiences from said Sponsors.

I don’t want to take away from what makes this society special – we have a great culture and it is one I plan on enhancing by reintroducing past initiatives such as “Lunch with the Economist” and reinforcing the already present socials and workshops. Recognizing the need for a platform to discuss economic principles and scenarios, I believe in inter-disciplinary and inter-societal collaboration to produce the first economics podcast club, promoting critical thinking and intellectual discourse. To complement this I want to introduce a weekly speaker series to host both students and influential members of the Economics world, all of which will be on our very first website.

Furthermore, I am committed to ensuring students are involved just as much as society members by involving themselves in student publications on behalf of EconSoc as well as in new subcommittees that will delegate aspects of the society to unelected members.

If elected as President, I pledge to utilise our collective talents and passions to create a vibrant community and work closely with the society to plan a diverse range of events that cater to the interests of our members and the wider community.
