Vote for Arya: 'I will Always Be There'

My name is Lauren McLeod, I am a 1st year Music and Music Technology student as well as a musician. I have been an avid and active member of album review since I began Uni in September, and have helped organise many events since I joined committee in 2nd semester. I love live music and hope to organise more events showcasing the local bands, as well as album reviews covering a larger variety of genres.

I am a business management and marketing student going into my final year. My course is all about how to be a good leader and manage teams, so I would be great with that. I have also always been interested in understanding what people enjoy and the variety of it.
I’ve loved having the opportunity to be your social media secretary and my lovely fellow committee members for trusting me with a vision- I didn’t have one but I think the insta aesthetic looks great! I’ve also loved meeting so many new people. And I definitely have a vision for how the society can improve next year when we hopefully get bigger!! I suggest a focus on two things: community and engagement.


Community
We’ve built such a lovely community this year and we should definitely aim to keep that momentum going. Me, and loads of our members initially joined by themselves, so I can definitely say I understand what it feels like, especially as a wee fresher. So I want it to be easy for new members to engage with our existing members by always having a group activity to keep us building shared experiences. This is also great for people who dont attend as much to still be engaged, and for regulars to see new faces. Inclusivity is important and we can be sober for occasional sober socials, while keeping all ticket prices low of course 💸
I also think people do love intimate venues like houses a lot, so definitely more of those!And more of a variety of the lovely local venues in Leeds, more justice for headingley livers maybe.

Engagement
Something we could also benefit from is a more systematic approach to album reviews. Some people have a lot to say and some have a few thoughts. Some people dont always know what to say unless prompted, and facilitated discussion would help engagement a lot! We could do this by having more seminar-style reviews, as this would encourage more intentional yet casual discussion about the album and related music stuff.
Regular music quizzes and kahoots to show off your music knowledge (or lack of) with incentive prizes to be won would also be great for engagement. Themes are great too and I have loved the themed outfits this year!!! Themed outfits, playlists, events, socials…. so fun. People also submit so many great albums and we cant listen to them all but we can definitely have more collaborative playlists with a few songs per person that we listen to at parties and socials.
