Resits are usually reserved for students who have failed an assessment. This includes exams, essays and any other assessed work. For undergraduates the pass mark is 40, for taught postgraduates the pass mark is 50.

From 2016/17 students have one resit opportunity and in most cases this is capped at a pass mark. If you had mitigating circumstances approved, you might be given an uncapped ‘first attempt’ resit.

If you have failed an assessment you will usually be able to resit it in August. If you’re a final year student this will affect when you can graduate.

You can’t usually opt for a resit on the basis that you are unhappy with a mark which is considered a pass. If you had mitigating circumstances that mean you did significantly worse than usual, you might be able to request a resit of an assessment you’ve passed but this is up to your School.
