The appeals procedure is currently being redeveloped. Some new aspects are being brought in this year, and we are updating our guidance as things develop. If you're unclear about any part of the procedure, please email advice@luu.ac.uk or contact Student Cases at studentcases@leeds.ac.uk.

These timescales run from the date your finalised exam and assessment results are published online. The whole process can take several months.

Here's a more in depth explanation:

• Submitting the Appeal - your appeal should be submitted within 20 working days of your finalised results being published.
• Stage 1: Initial Review - a member of the Student Cases team will look at your appeal and decide if it is suitable to be included in the process. This should happen within 20 working days. If it doesn’t meet one of the grounds or if you have insufficient evidence, it may get rejected at this stage.
• Stage 2: School Consideration - Student Cases will send your appeal and evidence to the relevant School and they will provide their formal response, again this should happen within 20 working days. This will either be a Stage 2 Resolution, or comments on your appeal and a referral to the Committee.
• Stage 2a: Further appeal against Stage 2 Resolution - if you're unhappy with the remedy proposed by your School you can make a further appeal within 10 working days. This will either be referred to the Committee for review, or rejected and the Stage 2 Resolution will stand.
• Stage 3: Committee on Applications - if the Committee are determining your appeal you will be invited to a hearing with at least 10 working days' notice. If the Committee are reviewing a Stage 2a appeal then you won't normally be asked to attend the hearing. You should receive the outcome of any hearing within 10 working days. If you’re happy with the decision then that’s the end of your appeal.
• Stage 4: Pro-Vice Chancellor Review (PVC) - if you’re unhappy with the decision of the Committee, you can progress your appeal to the PVC within 10 working days. The final decision should be made within 20 working days of the PVC receiving your appeal.

FAQs

Can I still attend graduation if I’m appealing my final results?

If you want to appeal your final results, you are still able to attend your graduation ceremony if you meet the requirements. However, if you choose to graduate, you will graduate with the award and classification published in the final results. If the award or classification is changed due to a successful appeal, a revised certificate and transcript will be issued.

Alternatively you can defer your graduation to the next available ceremony following completion of the appeals procedure. If changes to the award or classification are made, this will be presented to you at the ceremony. 

Will my visa be impacted if the appeal takes a long time?

If your visa runs out in the time that your appeal is being processed, or if your student status has changed (e.g. you’ve been withdrawn or made external) your visa might be impacted. You will need to contact the Student Visa Advice team (studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk) in the University to discuss your individual situation. LUU Advice cannot give visa and immigration advice.

My situation is urgent, can my appeal be sped up?

Unfortunately not. The appeals procedure is a robust process and appeals won’t be prioritised based on individual situations - the nature of appealing means that most people within this process have difficult circumstances that are being impacted upon. As frustrating as this may seem, there is nothing we or you can do to speed this up and you will need to be patient and await each update and the eventual outcome.
