Learning Together: Exploring Whiteness and White Privilege Lunchtime Talk with Dr Nick Cartwright

Venue Room 6, LUU Level 2
Starts Wed 10 May 12:00PM
End Wed 10 May 1:00PM

In this lunchtime talk, Dr Nick Cartwright, lecturer at the School of Law, will

cover how we benefit from racism because of whiteness or proximity to

whiteness. To explore what whiteness and white privilege mean, he’ll take us on

a whistle stop tour off; Colour-blindness and white transparency; whiteness and

otherness; white privilege; and white fragility. This talk will not dwell on

White guilt or the reasons that Black or Brown people might feel justifiable

anger. It ends by considering suggestions for addressing the problems of

whiteness and white privilege. Dr Nick hopes that students leave with something

positive they can do as either someone who experiences racism or as someone who

wants to be an ally.
