STEMinar with Helen Gleeson
The Womxn in STEM Society would like to cordially invite you to the first of our ‘STEMinar series’ featuring Helen Gleeson, Cavendish Professor of Physics.
In 1989, Helen became the first female lecturer at the University of Manchester in Physics. Her research involves liquid crystals, photonic materials, and soft matter, and she has invented several novel applications, most recently switchable contact lenses.
Throughout her career, she has received a number of outstanding awards, including the British Liquid Crystal Society Hilsum and GW Gray Medals (2006 & 2013), the Holweck Prize and Medal of the Institute of Physics and Société Française de Physique (2012), and the Rank Prize Lecture recognising her research. She was also awarded an OBE for Services to Science (2009) for her work in outreach, and in particular encouraging women to study physics. At Leeds, Helen has been the Head of School of Physics and Astronomy and is now a national EDI champion for the research councils.
Come to learn more about her incredible academic journey next Wednesday 04 December 2024 at 11am in Roger Stevens LT 24!
