Welcome Film Night: English Vinglish
This screening of English Vinglish, which was shortlisted for India's official Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013, follows Shashi Godbole, an Indian woman living in New York who is put down by her family and in everyday life because she cannot speak English.
An English course she attends helps her gain self-esteem by interacting with people from diverse cultures. In the end, she beautifully portrays the strength and determination of a woman who learns a new language and overcomes challenges, showing that it is not necessary to adapt to Western culture at the expense of one’s own customs.
Do you also admire Shashi’s courage and adaptability? Or do you choose not to change to assert yourself?
""Should the English language have an inescapable claim to prominence? Can a shared language help unite people from diverse cultures and backgrounds""?
Please note tickets are required.
Please also arrive in time. The film will start from 6pm.
