PGR EDR Peer Support: Boardgames
Hello!
You’re invited to PGR peer support group for Emotionally Demanding Research; we’ll meet at the PGR lounge and have a board games session. It’s an opportunity to socialise with other PGRs doing emotionally demanding research, we offer a space to share your experience. The PGR lounge is in the LUU building, it is on the mezzanine level above the refectory (if you need to please email us or ask LUU helpdesk for directions) Please feel free to extend the invite and forward these meeting details. If you have any questions, comments or want to get more involved email Lucy and Ben, (pr22l2s@leeds.ac.uk; umbdg@leeds.ac.uk).
What is emotionally demanding research?
Emotionally demanding research can include researching sensitive issues (e.g. mental health, bereavement, violence), researching topics you have personal experience with, challenging personal events, or unexpected sensitive issues during research. There's not one definition of what is emotionally demanding, so the group is open to all PGRs who would like to come. Have a look at these resources for emotionally demanding research.
What is the peer support group?
PhDs can generate emotional demands, and some projects might require additional support. We promote the value of these impactful research activities and provide a space for mutual support. We follow Peer Support Principles. The group is organised by and for PGRs, co-led by Lucy Shananan and me, Ben Gregory.
What are the sessions like? Do I have to do anything?
If you've not been before the group is a relaxed casual meet up. Boardgames sessions are a good way to meet people informally. It is an opportunity to connect with other PGRs and get peer support if you want it. We usually ask people to share a bit about their project and talk through experiences. You do not have to share anything; you decide what you’d like to talk about. It’s a place you can use to off-load, get support, and support others.
Shouldn't we be working?
Attending a peer support session is part of your working day. If your project has emotional demands genuine self-care is important work. Talking to peers and taking time away from your project work can be an overall benefit for you, your wellbeing, and your productivity.
