The Sci-Fi & Fantasy society is the first society I joined when I started studying here six and a half years ago. Then my friends and I founded DiceSoc, and that became where I had to put my attention and love, I stopped coming to the movies and TV show viewings that Sci-Fi used to do, and eventually even stopped coming for the boardgames days. Now that I can choose to dedicate my time to something new, I want to continue and restart the events and socials that we used to be known for, and bring the society back to its popular days.

Next year I will emphasise revitalising our image, I want to make sure that everyone knows we are committed to bring us back to prominence, and that we’re going to start doing more than just board games every week. There will be more regularly scheduled chill socials for people to hang out, and consistent involvement in LARP and at conventions. When we’re asked about stuff like that, instead of saying “I know this guy does what you’re asking for, you should find him on this website”, I want to show up with you and make sure you feel welcome.

Some people think Sci-Fi & Fantasy’s broadness as a category is a weakness and that it has led to its decline in popularity. I want to use our name as a strength of the society, by bringing back collaborations with our other Geek societies, using our shared history, and my personal connection to Videogames & eSports, DiceSoc, AniSoc, and more, to create more intersections in our members, and make sure we’re not sidelined. Within these circles, we already know people who are experienced with doing essentially any event you can dream up, and I want to make that a reality as long as you’re willing to ask for them.

Aside from their knowhow, we as a society easily have the resources to allocate for these collab events with other societies to make them exciting for the attendees and attractive opportunities for the other committees to do things they could not afford on their own. We can bring incentives like subsidised trips, equipment, or locations hired for socials, and bring new people into the society who are excited to see more of these events. Events like these always make lasting memories and important for bringing people together between societies.

I have had four years of experience on committees, two years as secretary and two more as president. I’ve been involved in more than a dozen collab events, such as Geeknights and Varsity, and worked with other unis and external companies. I know what it’s like to grow a society from a small group of friends with no clue what we’re doing, to almost a hundred paid members. Right now I think it is a waste not to turn this society into something to be proud of again. It’s the oldest student society I know about, and I want to make it something that can still be here when I come back to show off this university to.
