Dear Members of LUU,

Having been secretary of the Sustainability Society for the past year, I feel that I have gained significant experience in running the society and gathering ideas of what students want from their time at Leeds. From running and planning events which foster an inclusive atmosphere for all members of our society to ensuring voices are heard when speaking to staff in SOEE to channel forward-thinking solutions and change.

If I was to become the next academic representative, I would ensure society committee voices are heard, to ensure student events can go ahead to achieve the best possible outcome and help improve the student experience at Leeds.

I would improve collaboration between LUU staff and societies to create opportunities for students to connect, socialize and form lasting friendships. I am also keen to push volunteering initiatives to help LUU societies to provide valuable networking opportunities which enrich professional and personal growth. By forging strong partnerships with our community and cultivating a sense of collective responsibility this can help our societies make a lasting impact both now and even more so in the future.

As academic rep, I am committed to championing the values of sustainability, community and empowerment to help bring our societies closer together and build lasting relationships which can help forge a brighter and more sustainable future. Putting student voices at the heart of my campaign and ensuring the student experience is further enriched to leave a lasting legacy of positive change in LUU and further afield.

Hiya! I’m Aimee, a part-time English Literature MA student going into my final year, and I would love to be your 2024/25 Academic Rep!

I am an active member of academic and non-academic societies and have experience running different societies at two universities fo the past four years. I understand how vital academic societies are in ensuring students have a fantastic university experience and making students feel like they are a part of their subject’s community.

Why me?
Societies are a significant part of my student experience throughout my education. I began my undergraduate degree at the height of COVID-19. Due to self-isolation, it wasn't easy to make friends. Societies allowed me to meet like-minded people despite the circumstances, and I was able to find a community away from home. Following this experience, I have been sure to involve myself in society committees at my undergraduate university (Queen Mary University of London) and the University of Leeds, where I am now pursuing my MA. Societies are crucial for students' wellbeing. I would love to be elected as the Academic Rep to ensure they run effectively and represent the voices and needs of their members.

Society Experience:
2021/22- President of Queen Mary University of London’s English Society.
2022/23- Social Media and Marketing Manager at Queen Mary University of London’s Peach Magazine.
2023/24- Writer and Editor at University of Leeds’ Her Campus Magazine.
2024/25- Social Media Secretary for University of Leeds’ English Society.

Aims:
-Academic Societies will receive fair representation and funding within the union.
-Offer a platform for the underrepresented student voice and ensure the union hears it.
-Increase the sense of community amongst our student body by ensuring Academic Societies are set up for success.
-Be a friendly face to all Academic Societies.
