I am passionate about making the study of medicine more accessible to students from widening participation backgrounds. As a medical student, I’ve been fortunate to participate in a variety of events that directly benefit aspiring medical students, including those held in collaboration with Bradford hospitals and the University of Leeds' Access to Med society. Through these experiences, I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges many students face when navigating the pathway to medical school, and it’s my mission to help break down these barriers.

If elected as a representative for the Access to Medicine society, I pledge to continue this work by organising impactful events. One initiative I’m particularly excited about is a Medicine Intro Day, designed to introduce more students to the possibilities of a medical career. This event would bring together medical professionals, current students, and those considering the field for an immersive day of learning and inspiration.

In addition, I plan to arrange school talks, focusing on younger students, to spark interest in medicine at an earlier stage. I believe these efforts will help demystify the journey to medical school and encourage a more diverse group of students to consider it as a viable option.

Hi, I’m Erin and I would love the opportunity to be second year rep this year! I know how difficult it can be applying to Medicine and I realise that it can be a confusing and stressful process to go through without any support. As someone from a non-selective school, I found the Medicine application process very tough because there were very few people who applied in my year, however, I don’t think it needs to be like that. I really believe that with the right help, applying to Medicine should and can be something that is equally accessible to everyone!

If I was elected, I would be more than happy to offer support to any budding medics in whatever way needed; whether that be by helping someone with their personal statement or whether it be offering some advice and reassurance to make the process feel less overwhelming. If given the opportunity, I would like to visit schools in Leeds to promote studying Medicine by offering an insight into what the course looks like and sharing the possibilities of what a degree in medicine can allow you to achieve. I would also like to tackle any misconceptions about the course by sharing my positive experience of studying here and bringing along other medical students to show that medicine is diverse and open to everyone. As well as this, I would like to create posters to be put up in local schools and public areas in order to include those people who feel that medicine is not within their reach.

I hope to be considered for this role as I am so keen to offer my help, partly because I am aware of how much of a make or break getting into Medicine was for me! However, ultimately I strongly believe that the biggest part of successfully applying to Medicine is having a passion, and so I am determined to help passionate people from less privileged backgrounds realise that this is not a reason to give up on becoming a doctor.
