Hi, My name is Shan and I am an upcoming third-year medical student. As a first-generation candidate, I've navigated the challenges of accessing Medicine with a deep understanding of the barriers faced by underprivileged students. My journey has been shaped by a scarcity of resources and connections, yet propelled by resilience and a drive to make a difference.

Throughout my application process to Leeds Medical School, I actively sought support and guidance. Access to Leeds events, including mock MMI sessions and application tips workshops, proved invaluable, offering practical skills and confidence-building opportunities and I want to be apart of it for the next generation.

My commitment to widening access extends beyond my own journey. As a mentor and tutor, I've worked closely with aspiring medical students from underprivileged backgrounds, providing guidance, support, and encouragement. Whether it's through one-on-one mentoring sessions or group tutoring sessions, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of personalized support in empowering students to pursue their dreams.

In addition to mentorship and tutoring, I've served as a Health Sciences student ambassador, engaging with prospective students and sharing my experiences of pursuing a career in healthcare. Through outreach initiatives in state schools, I've had the privilege of inspiring and supporting students who may not have considered Medicine as a viable option.

My dedication to widening access is further evidenced by my extensive volunteering in state schools, where I've facilitated workshops, delivered presentations, and provided support to students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of tailored support and guidance in breaking down barriers to entry.

Now, as Vice President, I am committed to leveraging my experiences and passion to enhance access initiatives at Leeds Medical School. By expanding programs like Access to Leeds and strengthening partnerships with local schools and community organizations, we can empower aspiring medical students from all backgrounds to realize their potential and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce.

Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of underprivileged students and pave the way for a more equitable future in healthcare education.

I am personally from a working class background and I have first hand experience of the barriers widening participation students face to get into medical school as I have overcome them myself. I am passionate about providing the support I wish I had to those on the same journey and I strongly believe that medicine should be equal and open to everyone. I have many exciting ideas to put forward for the society and I’ve loved working as a team within the committee this past academic year. I hope to get the opportunity to do so again to continue the amazing things we have achieved so far.

Hi there, my name is Sumaiyah, and I am applying for the role of vice president.

Being from a less advantaged background myself, I understand the importance of this society and how much value it holds, especially to prospective medical students. Therefore, I think the society deserves more recognition to extend its outreach to even more students. If I am successful in gaining the role of vice president, this will be my main goal for the society. Also, I have had various roles in other societies over the past 3 years hence I am very comfortable with working in a committee and helping wherever needed.

I am really passionate about widening access to Medicine especially as a 1st generation medic. I understand some of the struggles faced with applying to medicine especially the lack of resources and contacts for support.

When applying to Leeds I actually attended some of the previous Access to Leeds events such as a mock MMI and application tips workshop which immensely helped me. As Vice President I hope to continue this amazing initiative to help bridge this gap for future medical students that are underprivileged.
