As a first-generation medical student who has triumphed over formidable obstacles to access Medicine, I bring a profound understanding of the hurdles faced by underprivileged students. My journey has been marked by a dearth of resources and connections, yet propelled by resilience and an unwavering commitment to drive positive change.

Throughout my application journey to Leeds Medical School, I actively sought support and guidance, finding invaluable assistance through Access to Leeds events like mock MMI sessions and application tips workshops. These experiences not only equipped me with practical skills but also bolstered my confidence.

My dedication to widening access extends beyond personal achievement; I have actively engaged as a mentor and tutor, offering tailored support to aspiring medical students from underprivileged backgrounds. Through one-on-one mentoring and group tutoring, I have witnessed the transformative impact of personalized guidance on their aspirations.

Serving as a Health Sciences student ambassador, I have passionately engaged with prospective students, sharing insights into my journey and igniting their interest in healthcare careers. Through outreach initiatives in local state schools, I have had the privilege of inspiring students who may not have considered Medicine as a viable option.

My commitment to access is further demonstrated by extensive volunteering in state schools, where I have facilitated workshops, delivered presentations, and provided support to students aspiring towards healthcare professions. These experiences underscore the critical importance of tailored guidance in dismantling barriers to entry.

During my year in A2M, I have assisted in 2 mock MMI events and started a monthly newsletter aimed at year 12 students (not to mention getting a strike at the bowling social). Seeing how passionate this society is about making our career more inclusive has inspired me and intensified my desire to break down the obstacles in place for so many. It is for this reason that I would like to continue my work in A2M as the secretary.

I believe I am well-suited to this role as I have good organisation and multitasking skills but, more importantly, I am confident in engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds. This will prove useful when liaising with other societies to deliver new events and when reaching out to people who may need us. Social media has become a vital tool for engaging with our members and the wider community. I will diligently monitor our Instagram account, promptly responding to questions and fostering meaningful interactions. By leveraging the power of social media, we can effectively promote our events and initiatives, reaching a broader audience and maximizing participation.
Our society's beating heart is its meetings, which offer a forum for cooperation, organizing, and decision-making. I will be vital to the planning and execution of these events as Secretary. I will make sure that everything runs smoothly and effectively throughout our meetings, from creating agendas to taking minutes. All members will receive well-written minutes, ensuring that everyone is informed and held responsible.

For us to increase our influence and reach, partnerships are essential. I'm dedicated to fostering and upholding ties with other societies, looking for chances to work together – maintaining strong relationships within our school community.

My passion to join A2M stems from my respect for the society. There is a common misconception that there is a lack of talent within widening participation communities, but I firmly believe there instead is a lack of opportunity. Societies like A2M help students access more opportunities, diversifying our healthcare system and bringing in new, deserved talent and not letting misconceptions halt progression into the field. I know first-hand the value of having contacts to ask questions and get resources from during my own application. I love the idea of students having a go-to point of call so we can answer queries, and provide reassurance and support, and direct them to valuable resources during their applications to medical school.

With my organizational skills, attention to detail, and dedication to effective communication, I am confident that I can contribute to the continued success and growth of our society.
