Hi everyone,

My name is Amber Bettsworth, and I am hoping to be your next Community Engagement Secretary!

With already so many great initiatives going on for Community Engagement, I know it is a role with big shoes to fill, but I hope, and am confident, that I will be able to make a difference and push for community engagement even further!

Over the past 5 years, my experience in volunteering has been constant.
Throughout secondary school I completed all 3 Duke of Edinburgh awards, which involved building houses for families, volunteering as a netball coach and running a ‘Pink Box Appeal’, where I worked with companies to provide care boxes for female workers.

As Deputy Head Girl, I set up initiatives, such as guided reading classes and a buddy mentor system for the primary students, while also coaching the Year 7 students about inclusivity and positivity, earning a Youth Mental Health Qualification.

Within University, I was a student researcher for the Cerebra community engagement project, which involved me analyzing responses for a report.

This is all to say that I am not a stranger to helping the community; community engagement and volunteering have been an integral part of my school years and is something that I am passionate about.

With the framework already set up, I am hoping to expand some initiatives and add a few new ideas into the mix, ensuring that there is something for everyone. My ideas involve expanding the ‘societies into schools’ scheme, setting up mindfulness activities, and new charity events – but more importantly, it is about what YOU want to support, what YOU think we should do.

Hello, I’m Issy Elmes a second year law student. I’ve been a member of the law society since I began university and this year I’ve been on the subcommittee for community engagement. I believe I have the relevant experience, skills and dedication for the role of community engagement secretary. Being a member of the law society for the last two years has been thoroughly enjoyable, and I would love to be more involved by being on the committee.

I am eager to ensure that high quality charity events are held throughout the year. Including the wine and cheese night and charity auction, I would also like to hold a new event, a themed gala with a raffle for charity.

One area I would really like to focus on as community engagement secretary would be to increase awareness of the events that are held and the role of community engagement secretary. I would aim to achieve this by utilising the law society Instagram at the beginning of the year to advertise what events should be expected throughout the year. I’d also include information on which charities are being supported by these events and the other work community engagement is doing, like pastoral care. As well as using social media, I would send emails to members and use lecture shoutouts to ensure people are fully aware of community engagement and what we do.

I’d also really like to ensure I am gaining feedback, so I know how to improve. I’d email google forms to members to gain their opinion on the events held and what more could be done.

Regarding experience and skills, being on the subcommittee this year has fully equipped me to fulfil the role for next year. I’ve learnt exactly what is required of community engagement, as well as what went well this year and gained ideas for improvement for next year. I’ve also learnt that the role does require dedicating a large amount of time. The time management and organisation skills I have gained from juggling two jobs during my summers at university will stand me in good stead to deal with the demands of the role.

Further, I am passionate about raising money for charity and helping others. Currently, I am raising money for Women’s Aid by running the Leeds Half Marathon in May. So far I’ve raised £171 of my £250 target. This, along with taking part in societies into schools this year, shows my dedication for what community engagement stands for.

Hello everyone! My name is Jess, and I am running for the position of Community Engagement Secretary for the Law Society. I am passionate about making an impactful difference both within our society and wider community. If elected, my goal is to build connections, help local charities and ensure that we are actively contributing to important causes.
My key priorities include:
- Strengthening local partnerships and fostering strong relationships with local charities and organisations
- Guarantee our communities engagement activities are inclusive so everyone can get involved
- Put emphasis on collaborating with Sports Secretaries to organise charity events
- Ensure our activities reflect our values as law students by prioritising a positive change in our community
- Make sure that all members feel valued and welcomed
I have previous experience in my high school’s student council where I organised multiple events for charities, such as the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity, and local food banks. I am eager to bring my skills from my previous roles to make our Law Society more connected and socially responsible.
