Zara Ullah

Hi everyone!
My name is Zara Ullah, I am a First-Year Law undergraduate, and am hopefully your next Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Secretary!
Why me? :
The EDI role is integral in ensuring everyone is represented and celebrated at university, I believe that my past experiences as Diversity & Inclusion Officer at college, as well as being a current Children's Commissioner Ambassador, makes me suited for this role.
I am an easy to approach, passionate person who would love to collaborate with people from all backgrounds
I have experience in organising diversity events, most notably Culture Day at college, the Black History Month Showcase, and Pride events.
My experience has helped me gain connections with charities across the North West, this means we can hold a diverse set of events with local organisations
I often attend roundtables with the Children's Commissioner (Dame Rachel De Souza) in Parliament, to discuss levelling the playing field for minority voices – this includes care experienced students, and students that have interacted with the criminal justice system.
I would love to contribute to the inclusive and celebratory community we have at University of Leeds, and introduce new events and initiatives!
My initiatives:
I am very proud of my journey into higher education as a British Bengali student coming from a socially mobile background. With this being said, I would love to introduce these new initiatives -
‘First-Gen Lawyers Campaign’
This campaign would create a support system for students who are the first generation of their family to go to university. The campaign could hold workshops on imposter syndrome, networking barriers, and widening access law opportunities.
‘Hidden Identities in Law Campaign’
This campaign would explore how invisible identities, such as neurodivergent identities, LGBTQ+ identities and socio-economic backgrounds impact journeys into legal careers
This campaign may include networking events that feature testimonials and panel discussions, and perhaps mentoring opportunities for students
Additionally, as a Pro Bono Volunteer at the Refugee Education Training Advice Service, I would love to use my role to highlight the different community outreach programmes open to University of Leeds students, which interact with people from an array of backgrounds!
Most importantly, I would love contribute to a community of belonging at university, and ensure that all voices are heard!

Nauf Hmood

Hi I am Nauf Hmood and this is why I should be your Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Secretary!
I’m excited to run for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Secretary! As a passionate advocate for representation and inclusivity, I believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued - especially in the legal field.
📋 With my experience as the leader of the Liberal Party’s Youth and Diversity Initiative in my home city, I have worked to promote engagement among underrepresented communities, ensuring that diverse voices are not only heard but actively shape decision-making.
Additionally, my time working in a Member of Parliament’s office has given me hands-on experience in advocacy, community outreach, and policy development. Working with new incomers on their Immigration Cases has helped me foster a welcoming and culturally diverse mindset and understanding of all backgrounds - skills that are crucial for driving real change in EDI initiatives.
🎤 My Initiatives:
"EDI in Practice":
- Partnering with law firms for interactive workshops on how EDI policies impact real legal cases and professions
- Mock scenarios where students analyze legal issues related to discrimination, workplace diversity, and accessibility
- Opportunity for networking with firm representatives
"Breaking Barriers - Mentorship Program"
- Connect first-year students from underrepresented backgrounds with upper-year mentors
- Offer informal networking sessions, advice on navigating law school and career guidance
- Feature guest mentors from diverse legal backgrounds, including solicitors and barristers
"The Inclusion Moot"
- host debate or mini-moots focused on EDI discussions, such as "Should quotas be introduced in law firms to improve diversity?"
- Collaborate with mooting societies and legal professionals as judges
- Prize for best arguments promoting inclusivity
Cultural and Diversity Celebration Events
- From hosting Cultural Celebration Weeks that spotlight key traditions like Diwali, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Pride, and Black History month
- Organizing "Beyond the Gown" Speaker Panels featuring diverse legal professionals
- Interactive workshops
- Firm-sponsored EDI panels
- "Faith & the Law" discussions
Through my lived experiences as an Iraqi-Canadian I am committed to creating a law school environment where diversity is celebrated, important conversations are encouraged, and opportunities are accessible to all. Whether it’s through impactful events, collaborative initiatives with societies, or pushing for meaningful change, I want to ensure that our EDI efforts go beyond just words, they create real impact.
🎖️ My experience organizing events, liaising with key stakeholders, and leading initiatives to promote inclusion has prepared me to take on this role with dedication, creativity, and impact.
If elected, I will work to amplify student voices, foster connections with diverse legal professionals, and ensure that our law school continues to be a space where everyone belongs. Vote for me, and let’s make inclusion more than just an idea - let’s make it a reality!
Vote Nauf Hmood for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Secretary! 🌟✅

Yasmin Raven

Hi everyone!
I'm Yasmin, a first year LLB Law student aspiring to be a solicitor, and I'm running to be your Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Secretary!
Why choose me?
- I have an awareness of different cultural perspectives, due to being both Malaysian and English
- I'm a friendly, easygoing person who's passionate about celebrating diversity and achieving equal opportunity for all!
- I'm collaborative and willing to execute suggestions made by you!!
A couple initiatives I have in mind:
- Collaborating with other societies to celebrate culture through film, literature, food and more! For example, an event with the Baking Society in which you could bring your favourite sweet treat from your culture (or come along with a donation) will bring groups together and broaden horizons!
- 'Beyond Borders' - sessions in which all students, international and home, can share parts of their culture, language, and motivations for studying law. By employing these sessions, we can learn from the experiences of others and appreciate how our diverse backgrounds have led us to the same place at the same time!
- Inviting lawyers from diverse backgrounds (whether that is on the basis of sex, race, class, sexual orientation, disability, and neurodivergence) to speak about their experiences and successes during their legal career to underrepresented students, with the opportunity to network and ask questions afterwards! This would empower students and hopefully encourage them to know they deserve a seat at the table, and that imposter syndrome is not forever.
- Celebration of cultural and religious holidays/festivals, and more!
If you have any questions, please contact me via email (msns7693@leeds.ac.uk) or my instagram campaign account (@yaz4edisec)
