Hello, I’m Andrew, a first-year student currently studying history at Leeds. This year, I am running for the position of Non-Law Secretary for the University of Leeds Law Society

I am extremely passionate about creating an inclusive environment for both law and non-law students. As a first-year history student and an active member of the Law Society, I have seen the importance of making connections across different areas of study. By running for Non-Law Secretary, I hope to organise and create impactful events that encourage collaboration between different areas of study.
Although I am in my first year, I have developed strong communication and organisational skills. Being deputy head boy, an academic and peer mentor, volunteering at a primary school, and the school rugby captain; all these activities have helped me improve such important skills including leadership, communication and critical thinking. Additionally, training for the London Marathon and raising funds for Children with Cancer UK this year has helped me become more resilient and hard-working. I believe charitable events such as the annual Charity Auction, which the Law Society hosts, are vitally important in creating a welcoming community. I’m confident these skills will allow me to coordinate effectively with students, plan engaging and meaningful events and keep everyone informed. I also bring a fresh perspective on how we can engage more non-law students in the Law Society’s activities.
If I am elected, I plan to organise more events that foster a sense of belonging and community between law and non-law students. Additionally, I want to create opportunities for non-law students to gain a better understanding of the law and its relevance to their studies. Events could include coffee mornings, evening drinks and panel talks by trainees, associates or partners who graduated with a non-law degree. I am committed to listening to everyone’s ideas and concerns and ensuring that our events are tailored to the member’s needs and interests.

Hi, I’m Kathryn, and I am a second year International History and Politics student.
I am delighted to be running for the position of your Non-Law Secretary for 2025/26!

As a non-law student myself, I know first-hand how daunting it can be engaging with a society that is heavily populated by law students, many of whom know each other from classes, and have a much more secure knowledge of the legal sector than you might at this point in your academic career.
My goal as your non-law secretary is to ensure that students from all academic backgrounds are able to benefit from the same opportunities that law students do by promoting the inclusivity of this society.

Every academic background provides a valuable perspective on the law and approaching the tasks assigned to a legal professional. I aim to ensure that non-law students recognise the valuable nature of their unique perspectives and recognise how this can strengthen applications and subsequently their legal careers.

Another challenging aspect of beginning a career in law from a different academic background is the subsequent steps towards qualification after completing your undergraduate degree. The variety of options available for non-law students to covert as postgraduates adds to the existing overwhelming nature of applications. I aim to simplify this research process for you by working with the Media and Events Secretaries to ensure you can access resources and ask questions to the relevant representatives to assess which options are best for you.

To simplify, by voting for me I will ensure:
- You feel welcomed and represented in a society that has a strong law student presence

- You recognise your unique skills and view them as an asset to your legal career

- You are aware and supported in the research and application processes for postgraduate options for law conversion courses and beyond

Hi!
I’m Isabel (an aspiring barrister), seeking your support in wanting to help you in the role of Non-Law Secretary 2025/26. I am currently in my first year, studying English Literature. I grew up in South London with firm family roots in the North. I want to use my proficient organisation and networking skills to provide non-law members an added advantage.
As a member of the Aspiring Solicitor’s First Programme, I have attended many career fairs and Law Society events such as dinners, workshops, and panels. I appreciate how challenging it may be, especially for those of us who are non-law members to have the additional confidence to put ourselves out there. Therefore, I appreciate that we can benefit from specific advice from non-law degree solicitors/barristers, providing further guidance in navigating how to qualify via a non-law degree route. I also want to provide more cross directorate collaboration with societies such as History, Politics, and English that host many aspiring solicitors/barristers and even entice them into joining the society.
Using my effective networking skills, I have already started to build a cohort of professionals and shall continue this work. I appreciate how it is not necessarily easy to engage with students who already know each other, so as your proficiently organised secretary, I shall create a safe space within the society for non-law members by hosting various informal gatherings. I have meticulously organised school wide events such as sustainable fashion shows and murder mystery hunts to great success. I would easily be able to transfer these skills to planning events next year.
