A welfare sec should be someone committed to supporting and helping members of the club and should be able to offer help and guidance regarding a variety of matters such as mental health, social support and general everyday university issues. You will set aside an hour or so each week to be on campus for a welfare club. These give members the opportunity to come and see you to discuss any problems or issues they may be having, or even just for a chat to clear their heads. This is also a chance for members to come and talk to each other and debrief. You should be a person who everyone in the club will find approachable and trustworthy, therefore making members feel confident in coming to talk to you without a fear of any judgement. Having a good range of social and communication skills is key in this role as you need to read situations and be able to say the right thing at the right time or just be there for an individual and listen to them. This person should fully understand the importance of conversations being STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL, and only seek further support with the permission from the member. It is important to know the support systems available by the university to help members who come see you and help you signpost them if required. Welfare secs are also responsible for running and planning welfare sober socials which can be any fun sober activity for members to take part in.

The Role and Your Responsibilities include:

·       Weekly Welfare Check-in Form

·       Welfare Club

·       Club Welfare Issues & Signposting

·       Organise one Sober Social per term
