Regardless of if you’re a member, a reader or a student; I want a better version of The Gryphon that works for you. My goals for The Gryphon would include the following:
Spreading The Gryphon's Wings
A focus on Leeds - By creating and further developing more-existing relationships with the local Leeds
community; we can increase The Gryphon’s visibility by distributing in local Leeds hotspots such as Hyde
Park Picture House, Left Bank, Belgrave, Brudenell and much more.
More Funding - By getting The Gryphon more funding through grants such as the National Lottery Arts and
Cultures fund; as well as through sponsorships and advertising; we can ensure that The Gryphon is more
accessible for readers, is more visible and is more regular.
Diverse Voices – I plan to amplify minority voices within The Gryphon more. this will be through workshops
dedicated to people who have not had access or opportunity to create, and a sustained effort to showcase
the stories of LGBTQ+, POC and working-class people.
For Members
More Opportunities - Opportunities are key for aspiring journalists and are a good experience even if
members have no interest in journalism as a career! Through the means of gaining more funding The Gryphon
will be able to give. members more opportunities including holding professional panels, gaining access to
more events, screenings, industry days and much more.
More Accountability - Accountability is something every society should strive for. I would hold bi-weekly
general meetings for members and for those curious about joining where they ca discuss with editors issues
they may be having, ideas they’d like The Gryphon to do, and feedback for the union.
A More Social Gryphon - Being social is key for uni societies, if I were elected, I would ensure that The
Gryphon hold more, varied socials such as regular launch parties, editors hang outs, more cinema trips,
collaborative socials with other uni societies and more. I would do this by creating a new role for The
Gryphon, a social secretary. On top of this, I would also increase our social media presence; regularly
posting about writer's meetings, socials, opportunities on social media, again increasing our visibility.
For Everyone
Making The Gryphon Work for Students - By collaborating with the careers service and other companies, I
hope to create a job page in The Gryphon and our website that advertises vacancies, paid opportunities and
agency work so that students have even more of a reason to read our paper; and so that they don’t struggle
financially whilst at university.
Something old, Something New - I hope to bring back The Enigma section of The Gryphon, which used to
have games and horoscopes, and also to create a new, individual zine that publishes roughly 3 times next
year.
Collaboration - I hope to create more collaboration within The Gryphon and outside of it – part of this will be
with a new, sustained focus on collaborating with other uni societies including media and non-media socs.
