Your Campus, Your Eden: No student left behind
University should support you—not punish you for struggling. When my dad died during my second year, I was forced to complete my resits the day after his body was taken from our home. There was no formal grief policy, no financial support, and no safety net when I needed it most. I had to take time off, but that meant losing my bursary and paying full tuition for just one lecture. Wellbeing shouldn’t be a fight—it should be a right.
As LUU’s Creative Wellbeing Project Coordinator, I’ve managed a £27,000 wellbeing budget, built student support initiatives, and fought for change. Now, I want to do more. My campaign is about real, structural support—not just awareness.
1. Grief & Loss Support: No Student Left Behind
The Problem: Grieving students face isolation, financial instability, and academic pressure—with no structured support.
What I Will Do:
Introduce an automatic grief policy—academic and financial support, no questions asked.
Bereavement bursaries—because no student should have to work to survive while grieving.
Specialist grief and trauma support—trained professionals who understand student loss.
2. Wellbeing Beyond Western Models
The Problem: Mental health support is one-size-fits-all, ignoring global approaches and cultural diversity.
What I Will Do:
A Multicultural Wellbeing Panel—paid student advisors shaping inclusive wellbeing strategies.
Train counsellors in diverse mental health models—support that actually reflects student experiences.
Expand holistic and non-Western wellbeing options, from community-led support to alternative therapies.
Push for better NHS mental health support, cutting wait times and ensuring disability support works.
3. Cost of Living: Real Financial Support for Students
The Problem: Students are being priced out of leadership, societies, and academic opportunities due to financial pressure.
What I Will Do:
Paid leadership roles in societies—students shouldn’t be unpaid labour while UoL profits.
More sector-relevant part-time jobs—gain experience in your field, not just in retail.
Reduce student bus fares and expand routes—working with Leeds Beckett and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
LUU Supper Club—free/affordable communal dining to tackle student food insecurity.
Increase NHS and placement bursaries—future healthcare workers deserve financial support, not burnout.
Fight for stronger student housing rights—better protections from exploitative landlords.
Wellbeing isn’t just about therapy—it’s about security, support, and a system that works for you.

Mayank Berry – Your Wellbeing, My Priority
Hey, I’m Mayank Berry, and I’m running to be your student
representative because I believe a thriving student community starts
with wellbeing. With four years of experience in Human Resources and
as an HR Business Partner, I’ve seen firsthand how mental and physical
wellbeing directly impact performance and happiness. In just seven
months, I helped increase employee retention from 64% to 90% by
focusing on wellbeing, and I want to bring that same energy to support
you!
What Inspired Me to Run?
University life can be stressful, from exams to financial struggles. I’ve
seen firsthand how wellbeing initiatives improve lives, and I believe
students deserve the same level of support to succeed.
My Best Experience as a Student
Being part of a diverse learning environment has shown me the power
of support and community. The friendships and collaborations I’ve built
remind me how important it is to feel connected and heard.
What I Will Do for You?
Reduce Exam Stress – Exams are a major source of anxiety, and
students often struggle alone. I will introduce mindfulness and
meditation sessions, along with peer-support workshops, to provide
safe spaces where students can openly discuss stress and learn coping
strategies. These sessions will be student-led, interactive, and easily
accessible to all.
Healthier Food Options – Nutrition plays a vital role in mental and
physical wellbeing. I will work with campus services to ensure more
affordable and nutritious snack options, such as fresh fruits, protein-
packed meals, and balanced food choices, are available across the
university. No student should have to choose between convenience and
health.
Student Wellbeing Checks & Awareness – Many students are unaware
of the wellbeing support already available on campus. I will push for
monthly wellbeing check-ins where students receive updates on
ongoing university resources, mental health initiatives, and financial aid
options. This will include emails, posters, and interactive events,
ensuring that no student is left in the dark about the help they can
access.
A Future with Me in This Role
A campus where mental health is a priority, student voices are heard,
and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. I will advocate for
real, meaningful changes to make your student life healthier and
happier.

master’s in public health. As international student, I know
how difficult it can be to feel overlooked and out of place. If

Lucy 4 Wellbeing – #LiveLaughLucy
Hi! I’m Lucy Thompson and I’m a 3rd year philosophy student by day and a mischief
bartender by night – I’ve seen student life from every angle. Whether it’s celebrating a
big night out, stressing over deadlines, or figuring out how to make £10 last the week, I
know firsthand the high and lows of university life. That’s why I’m running for Wellbeing
Officer - to make sure every student has the support they need to thrive, not just survive.
As someone who has struggled with their mental health, I know how difficult it is to
balance your studies and your personal wellbeing. Whilst the University offers
professional support, there are lots of improvements to be made. That’s why I want to
bring fresh student-led solutions to our Union – ones that make a genuine difference to
your day-to-day life.
If elected, I will focus on three key areas:
Tackling the Cost of Living Crisis
• More student discount that actually help – I will collaborate with local
businesses to introduce meaningful student deals, from food to essentials.
• Increased access to free essentials – No student should have to struggle for
hygiene products, food, or study material. I’ll push for more free essentials
across campus.
• Easier access to financial advice – Whether it’s budgeting tips or emergency aid,
I’ll ensure financial support is clear, accessible, and student-focused.
Better Mental Health Support
• Stronger support for students experiencing grief – Losing a loved one while at
university is devastating. I’ll work to introduce better protocols and dedicated
support for grieving students.
• Opt-in wellbeing check-ins – Life at university can be overwhelming, and
sometimes you just need to hear from someone who cares. I’ll introduce an opt-
in system for regular wellbeing check-ins.
• Simpler academic extension requests – No more jumping through hoops when
you’re struggling. I’ll push for a more compassionate and streamlined extension
request process.
Helping Students Settle into Leeds
• Buddy scheme for first years – Moving to a new city is daunting. I’ll introduce a
peer-led buddy system to help new students feel at home.
• Anonymous peer-advice line – Sometimes, it’s easier to talk to someone who’s
been through the same challenges. I’ll introduce a student-run, judgement free
advice line.
• More wellbeing socials and pet therapy – Wellbeing isn’t just about support; it’s
about fun too! Expect more pet therapy, relaxed social events, and activities that
make uni life brighter.
I’m not here to make empty promises – I’m here to fight for real changes that make a
difference. With your vote, we can build a student community that’s supportive,
inclusive, and genuinely committed to your wellbeing.
