Magandang Araw! This is Zuriel writing to hopefully become Filsoc’s future president.

As soon as I joined Filsoc, my confidence shot up drastically. The community greeted me and everyone else so kindly with warm arms, I instantly felt included, evident in all the amazing people and friends I’ve made through this society. I would like to aim to do the same, caring and to be of aid and assistance to anyone in any way needed just talk to me anytime and I’ll be there for you whenever. Quite Flamboyant!

I aim to create an inclusive space where everyone can enjoy themselves and freely explore ideas. It is important to me that the voices of all are heard as the most important part of the society isn’t that of the president but that of all who attend and the community we create. Such examples in mind include, collabs with other societies and hopefully other Filsoc societies, and a large range of activities, inside and maybe outside Leeds, that I aim to implement for at least once a week (I will try my best), and as ambitious as it may be maybe even theme park trips? Even as small as a cafe social to paintballing or laser tag.

As I am finishing my foundation year, I will technically be starting my 1st year of my actual course, Chemical engineering, and so I should have more time thinking about our society and what I can do to ensure activity and an interactive experience.

I think I’m known to be quite unserious and goofy 😭(according to possibly trustworthy sources), but I hope my joyful personality will put a smile upon others as big as mine. I may not be locked in for attendance academically, but I will lock in prioritising everyone having a good and memorable time! (dw I will lock in it’s slowly increasing).

As someone who spent most of his life in the Philippines before moving to the UK at 17, I have experienced firsthand the warmth of our culture and its uniqueness– a sense of belonging that I want to bring to FilSoc. I also recognize how distant and limiting Filipino culture can feel here. This is why FilSoc became such a meaningful space for me–a community where I have met incredible people and found a sense of home. If elected as president, my goal isn’t to make FilSoc larger, but to strengthen its foundations and core values as a society– turning it into a home away from home for every Filipino student.

My experience working in multiple hospitality jobs and volunteering at an Oxfam Kilo Sale event alongside committee members has strengthened my ability to work in a team and communicate effectively. These experiences, combined with my active involvement in FilSoc since day one, have given me a deep understanding of how our events are organized and what we can do to enhance them. With these skills, I am confident in my ability to manage FilSoc effectively and bring my visions to life.

Beyond FilSoc, I have taken the initiative to build strong connections with other cultural societies such as ThaiSoc and BCSoc. My highlights in FilSoc were the quintuplet and joint events which helped me meet a lot of amazing people. If elected, I want to increase collaborative events, giving our members more opportunities to socialize and expand their networks. I also plan to introduce more culturally engaging events, including the comeback of the iconic Filipino Christmas party (Exchange gifts, games with prizes, and a possible boodle fight!?), Filipino-friendly games at GIAGs (Pinoy Henyo, anyone?), and a more interactive platform for our members (we sure do love to yap!).

I am not here to chase numbers—I am here to create meaningful experiences through Kultura, Komunidad, at Paghihikayat (Culture, Community, and Empowerment). Everything I implement will be rooted in these core Filipino values, ensuring that FilSoc is not just a society, but a true family.
