Hey! I’m Ines Lopes and I’m applying to be president of PSYCSOC for the year 2024/25. I’m applying for this role as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all socials hosted by PSYCSOC and want to support the progression of the society, as is has been such an important part in my academic life. Not only would I be honoured to represent the members of PSYCSOC, but to ensure the society’s core values, such as inclusivity and respect, are upheld would be an incredible opportunity. For me, it all began with my first Otley run back in September 2023, followed by a number of wholesome socials and, more recently, an unforgettable trip to Madrid. These events have become treasurable experiences and I want to ensure all members of PSYCSOC have the same positive experiences as me.

Whilst being a part of PSYCSOC this year, I have created amazing memories and, more importantly, lifelong friends. I have always felt included in PSYCSOC and felt free to be myself. This inspires me to maintain a friendly, sociable environment for everyone to be a part of. In addition, I strongly believe in a healthy balance between academic and social life. I understand the importance of prioritising academic support provided by the society, as well as the social events. Making new friends would have been a lot harder without the PSYCSOC family and I will always be grateful to have been a part of it.

To begin with, I would like to propose the idea of having a buddy system to ensure first years have a direct source of support; they will be able to ask questions about the course and will readily be provided with support about university life. I definitely had lots of questions and would have greatly benefitted from this. For older year students, I would like to work alongside the Careers secretary to increase the number of careers talks we offer. Currently, PSYCSOC provides many clinical and forensic talks, however individuals may have other pathway ideas that they want to explore. Ideally, I would like to have more varied career events which would encourage everyone to follow the future they dream of. For instance, events that provide information on using psychology in careers such as marketing and economics. Additionally, I am more than happy to assist any other committee members with their roles and work alongside them to develop their ideas, as well as, to act on their feedback to ensure PSYCSOC is a comfortable and encouraging environment for all!

This role requires ambition, high motivation and a sociable person, three qualities that I believe I have. I aim to make sure there are regular socials and mainly, that our society runs smoothly while ultimately, shedding a fun and positive light on our course!

My name is Luisa Clarke, and I am currently in my first year of psychology. I am running for President of PsychSoc because I want to become more involved and active in the social life of our course. I have really enjoyed all the socials this year – especially the Madrid trip – although it might have been the most hungover I’ve ever been!

I have always been incredibly organised, and goal driven, making sure that anything I do is done with maximum effort. I have previously led many school wide events such as festivals and awards nights (in my previous schools) working with many different people – both students, staff, and the public. If you elect me, I promise to ensure the smooth running of PsychSoc and all the fabulous events it holds.

Through the socials and society, I have made some of my closest friends, all of which make up a huge part of my university life. I really want to make this an experience that many people can have, as well as providing a welcoming and positive membership for anyone that joins. If you’ll have me, I’d love the opportunity to help create another successful year of PsychSoc, making this the best one yet!
