Dear girls, gays and those alike,
I, Eve Oli Oli Oli (otherwise known as Eve Oli or formally, Eve Moat), shall be running for club secretary this coming year. This may come as a shock after my previous antics on tour, for example, nearly missing both the outbound and inbound flights, however, let me explain my thinking.
As much as I seem unorganised and completely off with the fairies, I am actually quite logical and very particular when it comes to having things in the right place. For example, I am always on time to training (as long as no buses break down) and I am basically like the company treasurer for my flat-of-9, as I have a good memory, I am honest and I’m always able to settle disputes over money, hence why I would be a reliable person to have access to the club’s cash and would be ready with the referee money and receipt each Wednesday.
I have shown that I am good at liaising with officials, as I have to communicate with managers and those in senior roles to me in both my place of work, when I write for the National Citizen Service and when I have a problem in radio and I have to talk to the editor or head of the section, therefore ordering jumpers, organising teas and talking with the union about GIAGs will not be an issue. Also, doing a biology degree means that I have to take notes quickly, which would be useful when taking minutes, and I’m pretty handy with an Excel spreadsheet and always have one to hand on my laptop, so numbers and figures aren’t no stranger to me!
My previous endeavours with other societies (let’s not talk about men’s lacrosse) show that I can easily talk to people and get along well with others, so if anyone needs me, I’m always here to help. Be that a player, another member of committee or the CC and treasurer, who I know I would be working closely with, I’m always available and won’t hesitate to offer my support.
I know this has probably sounded really boring and not at all told you guys anything about me so let me share a few fun facts about myself that may or may not hinder my chances of a spot on committee:
• I sliced above my eye open by clashing heads with my best friend last time I did the Otley Run
• I slept with a LAX boy on tour after telling him in Leeds I had previously been talking to a girl
• My flatmate drank a pint of his own piss to show his commitment to his committee run and got some of it on our carpet
• I fell down the stairs at walkabout last week and then forgot why there was a massive bruise on my leg
• I managed to get Tash Pimm back to her room on tour night 3 after staying out until 6am
• The cashier in Austria thought I spoke German and I felt too polite to tell her otherwise
I would like to thank Samina for always wondering where the hell I have gotten to and making sure I’m ok, and for always being there for me on tour so I didn’t end up as a lost fresher. I hope we both have some good insights into each other to share at this year’s AGM.
Next year, if I was to be elected as secretary, I would:
• Work towards ensuring each team has a coach allocated to them, as this would firstly give players more opportunity for improvement, and secondly take some of the pressure off of the team captains where their team doesn’t have a coach
• Be present at the give it a go sessions to ensure all is running smoothly
• Liaise with the club treasurer to work out where any spare funding can go to within the club, such as:
o More kit tops to replace any that have gone missing/been damaged
o Potential subsidies for far away games, especially those that would require a stay over, and tour
• Ensure each team is in the correct league and if there are issues, communicate with the union or the university directly
• Work with the media secretary to ensure all events, matches and socials are fully advertised and documented to allow for as much participation and praise as possible
• Work with team captains to organise more friendlies between local teams out of season and in gaps between matches, such as against Beckett and Trinity
Just trying to keep things upbeat and I hope this wasn’t too dull and that this gave you an insight into my ideas.
Hopefully my speech for AGM is pretty decent (going to need all the luck I can get).
Yours sincerely,
Eve “Oli Oli Oli” Moat.
