Hi, I’m Maraki — Running for Events Officer

Backstage has honestly been one of the best parts of my uni experience. It’s such a special community, I’ve made amazing friends, grown in confidence, and learnt how to work in high-pressure, creative environments.

As a Backstage Member I’ve:
• Crew’d 5+ shows across set, stage & lighting
• Designed the set for MT’s The Band
• Production Manager for MT’s Urinetown
• Set Designer LAMMPS The Little Mermaid (and currently still designing!)

So I really understand how intense show weeks can be, but also how rewarding they are.

That’s exactly why I want to be Events Officer.

I want to create opportunities for us to connect outside of the stress of shows, fun, relaxed events where we can socialise, build friendships, and enjoy being part of Backstage beyond just the Riley Smith.

I’ve previously been on committee for ACS (African Caribbean Society), where I helped run events like Valentine’s game shows and other socials, so I’d bring that same energy, creativity, and organisation into this role.

My goal:
To make Backstage feel even more like a community, not just during shows, but all year round.

I've recently started as a member of this society, and it's honestly one of the best decisions I've made since coming to uni! I've had so much fun and it's been amazing getting to meet people and work on some great shows. I want to be even more involved in the society next year, which is why I'm running to be your Events Officer!

I realise that, since we spend so much time working on shows, there isn’t a ton of opportunities to have events which makes them so much more important when the time comes! I’ve had such a warm welcome to the society this year so I want to pay that forwards by helping to keep up the community we already have and get new members involved :)

I’m working as a Student Ambassador part-time, so I have experience with getting people involved and helping to run events. I was also a part of my student leadership team in school so I’ve been in a similar position before. Finally, I’m a big fan of a party (if you saw me bladdered at the Addams afters, that wasn’t me it was A.I.) and I’m always up for a good chat, so I’m looking forwards to meeting you if we haven’t already!
