Hi everyone, I’m Thomas and I’m running to be your 2025/26 Head of Sport! I’m a second-year Economics student, but it feels like I’m getting a degree in LSR at this point! Sport is my biggest passion and LSR is the perfect channel to express it, with some amazing moments and people along the way! I dedicate most of my time to LSR, so it would be a privilege to play an active role in improving your experience as part of the committee.
Outside sport, I have been on Hometime for 3 consecutive semesters, where I regularly organise shows, segments and games. I always support the team in any way possible while pushing myself to innovate. As a result, so many great memories have been made on my shows and I love sharing the airwaves with you! I have also been posting on YouTube and TikTok for most of my life, culminating in me running the Fruity TikTok account! One of my main goals is to improve our communication and social media content, which I have lots of experience in.
I am an avid football fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Soccer Punch and Monday Sport, so I want to extend radio opportunities to more people. Outside of football, I am a casual fan of rugby, cricket, basketball, NFL and darts. Although I enjoy covering these sports, I will introduce specialist podcasts for individual sports, as the core shows can sometimes restrict your expression.
In a city of nearly a million people, I want to explore Leeds’ rampant passion for sport and untapped potential. As Head of Sport, I will elevate LSR by prioritising talent growth and creating a supportive environment to exchange exciting ideas. My main goal is to make Sport somewhere everyone wants to be, and I need your votes to do that! As with most sports, radio works best as a team!
My extended manifesto:
1. Commentary and media opportunities have recently been scarce, which should not happen in a city with a strong sporting culture. As Head of Sport, I will work to provide commentary opportunities for a variety of sports and teams every week. This will be achieved by establishing strong partnerships with teams before the start of the year and by consistently contacting university teams. Everyone in LSR will then have the chance to display their range of skills and passion for sport!
2. Alongside our three core shows, I will create specialist podcasts for rugby, football and F1 to give more opportunities to LSR members. These podcasts will be a great platform to practice your presenting skills and express your ideas!
3. To foster a community at LSR Sport, I will organise regular socials for the team! One-off ideas include an LSR sports day and the Soccer Saturday Challenge, with an LSR run club, 5-a-side football, pub quizzes and watchalongs on a more regular basis. However, more importantly, there will be no initiations under my watch! Inclusivity and diversity are key principles which I will uphold here.
4. On the theme of inclusivity, I will introduce initiatives to encourage more female, non-binary and ethnic minority background presenters to join LSR Sport. This starts by covering women’s sports much more often, either by covering women’s teams on our core shows or commentating on more women’s teams. I will emphasise promoting diversity when recruiting new LSR members, which is aided by our anonymous application process.
5. Similar to our producer scheme, I will offer commentary and media training sessions to all LSR Sport hosts. It is essential that the value of your LSR membership constantly improves and this scheme will provide you with stronger presenting skills. I will also provide opportunities and support to sport-related shows outside of our core, such as Sounds Like Team Spirit, a new show I produced this semester.
6. Finally, I feel like we are missing a trick by not collaborating with LSTV and not making more video content. As Head of Sport, I will prioritise our social media platforms by making use of the equipment and talent at our media societies. My ultimate aim is to win awards through our collaboration and university sport is the best platform for it!
