Hi,
I'm Clara, and I would absolutely love to be your outreach officer. BSL is such an incredible and beautiful language, and joining this society has been one of the highlights of my university experience.

I was 1st introduced to BSL 6 years ago when I started volunteering at an inclusive theatre charity, supporting members with a wide range of disabilities. In my gap year, I dedicated a lot of my time to helping members within the workshops and behind the scenes for this charity, and I believe these experiences make me well suited for this role.

Some rough ideas I would like to develop are;
- Aiding those interested in the completion of BSL qualifications (Level 1/2 etc.)
- Affiliation with a local charity
- Interacting with other societies (e.g choir, theatre, languages)

I am so excited to see all the new opportunities the BSL society will go on to do, and really hope I can be a part of it !!!

Hi, I'm Rachel!

I've been learning BSL for the last six years and have loved joining the BSL society here at Leeds.

I'm particularly passionate about widening access to BSL courses and qualifications. I know firsthand how difficult they can be to access and how valuable they are in learning BSL, having just achieved my level 2 certification. I would love to look into providing these courses for society members.

As a deaf person, I'm also focused on increasing deaf awareness and engagement with sign language on campus, and I would love to collaborate with other societies and teaching staff to achieve this.

I believe that I can best contribute to this society as outreach officer due to my previous experience in admin roles and liaising with other charities and organisations.

Hi everyone,

Since I hadn’t been learning BSL for very long, I was really nervous using what little I knew for the first time back in October, but the way everyone welcomed me and took the time to help me improve is exactly what I want to do for others. The joy I feel when learning languages has hopefully come across by trying to bring people together outside of the society as well.

Apart from the standard expectations of the role I would love the opportunity to communicate with the university in promoting an optional or discovery module in BSL, collaborate with the Events Officer to organise talks and events and support people on their journey to learning BSL whether it be as a beginner or someone trying to gain high level qualifications such as level 4/6.

I look forward to making so many more memories with everyone and seeing how the BSL society progresses this year and in future years, which hopefully I can be a part of. :)
