Hey everyone! I’m Rucha, a first-year physics student and proud Gujarati who never misses the chance to hype up a garba playlist! I am also someone who cannot function without organisation, structure and a colour coded calendar 🙈

I’m running for general secretary because I want to ensure NHSF Leeds runs smoothly behind the scenes. I aim to provide clear communication, efficient planning and the kind of admin that keeps the whole committee functioning like a solid parivaar :)
General Secretary is basically the role where being a perfectionist is a green flag and I’m built for it.

Before coming to Leeds, I played a key role in setting up my college’s Hindu Society from scratch, which meant coordinating meetings with staff, communicating with students, handling logistics and making sure our events were inclusive and that they actually deliver what the people wanted to see. As part of the committee, I took the initiative to open a mandir room. From this I learned how to manage details, solve problems quickly and keep everyone on the same page.

Studying Physics has also shaped the way I work. It’s trained me to stay calm under pressure, think logically when things get messy, and handle complex tasks. Whether it’s running experiments on zero sleep, debugging Python code at 2am, or building spreadsheets (my shaylas), I’ve learned how to stay focused, organised, and efficient in chaotic situations.

I want to be a place of support when someone needs help and be committed to keeping things transparent as I’m direct when something needs sorting. If you’ve seen my poster, you’ve already got the sense that I bring a mix of precision as a woman in STEM and chai fuelled chaos in the best way. And yes ‘organised’ word count = 1000 it’s a personality trait atp but honestly, that’s exactly what this role needs, and that it what I’ll bring! 🕉️

I was recently elected as Welfare and Liberation Executive, and although my role officially begins in June, it already reflects the trust people have in me to take on responsibility and support others.

I may not have direct experience in this specific role yet, but I’m someone who learns quickly, stays organised, and follows through on what I take on. When I commit to something, I make sure it’s done properly.

As General Secretary, I’ll focus on keeping everything clear, structured, and running smoothly. I’ll make sure communication is consistent, people stay informed, and nothing gets missed. I’m reliable, proactive, and always willing to step in where needed.

For me, this is about contributing to a society I genuinely care about and being someone the team can depend on.

My name is Diya, and I am applying to be your General Secretary next year.

Having served as a first-year rep this year, I have worked closely with the committee and seen first-hand what it takes to keep Hindu Soc running smoothly. By attending meetings and being actively involved, I have developed a clear understanding of the systems, communication, and organisation required behind the scenes. Because of this, I won’t be learning the role from scratch. I’ll be able to step into it from day one and contribute immediately, ensuring continuity, structure, and consistency within the committee.

As General Secretary, my focus will be on making sure communication within the society is clear, reliable, and efficient. I will take detailed, structured minutes during meetings and ensure they are shared and accessible, so everyone stays aligned and accountable. I will handle all necessary paperwork for events, socials, and sports sessions accurately and on time, reducing stress for the wider committee and allowing us to focus on delivering the best experience possible. I will also maintain organised, up-to-date contact lists to ensure smooth, dependable communication between the committee and members. In addition, I will manage room bookings for weekly sessions, ensuring everything is prepared in advance and runs smoothly.

Alongside this, I want to support our members' experience actively. Being someone sober myself, I understand how important it is for events to feel genuinely enjoyable and inclusive without relying on alcohol. I will work closely with the events team and committee to support well-planned, engaging socials, whether that’s themed events, cultural celebrations, or smaller gatherings where everyone feels comfortable, welcomed, and able to be themselves.

This year has shown me that what makes Hindu soc special isn’t just the events themselves, but how well everything is organised behind the scenes. When communication is clear and planning is done properly, everything else naturally falls into place. I want to be someone the committee can rely on to maintain that structure, ensuring things are done properly, on time, and to a high standard, so the society continues to grow and improve.

Meeting some of my closest friends through Hindu soc has also shown me how important these spaces are. Even small, well-run socials can have a lasting impact and create a real sense of belonging. That is why I am committed to making sure everything behind the scenes, from communication and planning to logistics and organisation, is handled properly, so that all you need to do is turn up, feel comfortable, and enjoy being part of the society.
