Social Sec

Hi, I’m Sophia, and I would love to be your Social Sec for the upcoming year. I’m heading into my third year, studying classical civilisation, and I have loved being part of the classics community at Leeds since the start. I really love planning events and socialising and I’ve come up with a huge range of ideas for interesting events and ideas to bring us together and have fun.  I’m a true classics geek and there’s nothing I love more than a good night out (or in!), which will make me a great choice for social sec. My plans include all the essentials for a great year, such as game nights, pub quizzes, film nights and of course the Otley Run. I also want to try out some other ideas, like regular symposia and Roman banquets, or Greek vase pottery painting, and Roman wine making and tasting. I think there is so much fun to be had with film and tv nights, whether it be Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra or Brad Pitt’s Troy, Disney’s Hercules or HBO’s Rome; or, some of my personal favourites like ITV’s Plebs and Monty Python's Life of Brian.  I also want to work with other societies to try branching out and giving us even more possibilities for events and socials, while meeting new people and getting a taste for some more societies. I will work with the committee to make sure we get a trip abroad to really see and appreciate the wonders of the ancient world (and of course have a brilliant holiday), but also plan trips for closer to home, like Vindolanda, or Eboracum (York) to see the Yorkshire Museum, the Multiangular Tower, and the Baths. Or possibly branch out around the country to see the classical sites of Bath, Colchester or London where we could see of course the British Museum, but also other gems like the Temple of Mithras or the Soane Museum. Finally, and importantly, I will work with our future president, Phoebe, and the committee too make sure we have the classics ball that I know we are all dying for.  I would love to be your Social Sec and I know that if I’m elected I will make sure we all have an unforgettable year! I can’t wait to meet you all, and I hope you will consider me for the role.
