Hi to all freestylers, Kimmy Jin here!

Why I am running for the role of Vice President begins with my love for freestyle. Joining such a welcoming community in my first year, who embraced us freshers with open arms has changed my life. I owe it to freestyle for being such a big part of my uni experience (one I wouldn’t change for the world) and want to give back to this amazing community. Before uni I had a hard time finding a sense of belonging, I felt as though I was always being judged, but once I found my freestyle family I've never felt more at home.
Being on the comp team, I have seen how the different committee roles come together to create a well-running society. After seeing my friends take on these roles and dedicate themselves to providing us with another amazing year, I want to do the same. I will always put freestyle first! This doesn’t just mean the competition teams but all freestylers whether you’ve come to one class or to just the socials. My goal is to welcome everyone!!

My goals as VP:

- Be a voice for all dancers within our Comp Teams; being on hip hop team, I have seen how important it is to have someone in our corner speaking up for us.

- Be a voice of reason; I want to make sure that every issue that may arise is taken care of with as much care and attention as possible.

- Arrange more fundraising opportunities for our society; bake sales, danceathons etc. with the future Welfare Sec and Secretary.

- Show up for freestyle as someone who is in your corner.

- Advocate for our society within the LUU and dedicate myself to forming a symbiotic relationship with the uni union.

- To bring back two different style classes a week; this is so that we can have something for all types of dancers no matter the style. (potentially even partnering with different societies)

- Introduce “class swaps” where we get different types of dancers try out different styles. This would broaden and allow us to branch out as dancers.

- To introduce classes for all levels of dancers (as a self-taught dancer I know the anxiety that comes with entering class for the first time).

- KEEP FREESETYLE FUN!!! I want to make sure that all freestylers are having as much fun through their freestyle experience as I have had these past two years!!

A vice president has a duty, being warm and inviting while also putting their foot down when it comes to important decision-making. I am extremely disciplined and determined, any tasks that need to be taken care of will be done as soon as it is on my radar. I also believe in fairness, so every team deserves to be regarded at the same level, and I will do just that.
Throughout my academic career I have been in positions where I have had varying responsibilities I’ve had to fulfil, learning to prioritise what is important and never backing down from a challenge. I have had roles from President of Amnesty International Society to Sports Captain to EDI Prefect. Having been the president of a society during my time at sixth form I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to keep a society running.

I’m looking forward to third year and getting dance with all you amazing ladies all over again and I can’t wait to do so!!

hey freestylers!! I have LOVED being your comp rep this year, I have been beyond proud watching everyone shine on stage! coming into my final year of uni (stop acc gonna cry) I would love nothing more than to give back to the society that has shaped my uni experience! Growing up as a dancer was the most rewarding experience, and being able to continue my passion at uni is something I will always be grateful for 🫶🏻 Growing up I competed across the country, dancing in pantos, taking ISTD exams and performing at the Royal Albert Hall and Disneyland!! Freestyle is all about growing as a dancer, and being your VP will allow me to continue pushing myself in this beautiful society! I will also continue to push for dance to be more recognised in the union, to get more funding and support as dance is a sport and we work just as hard as the others!!
Wednesday classes are such a big part of keeping our society inclusive and fun, which is why I would love to add even more opportunities for ALL members, fresher or leaver, to host Wednesday classes! And ofc to bring our much loved grads and fav choreographers back in!! I also think introducing beginner/intermediate levelled classes are the perfect way to ensure EVERYONE can come and have fun, and hopefully encourage more people to come and join our family. I would also LOVE to introduce a wider range of styles of dance to our classes, including tap and ballet, giving everyone the chance to grow as dancers and maybe even try something new!!! Alongside this, collaborating more with other societies, for example LUU street for some hip hop technique and salsa to step out of our comfort zones!! Lastly, I would LOVE to introduce acro so we can try new lifts and tricks, to have fun learning new skills together and build trust with each other!
Being on committee this year has opened my eyes to what it takes to run a successful society. The importance of communication between committee and members is something I will continuously push as VP. It’s so important for us to build relationships within the society - this year especially after dealing with a lot of health problems, it has reminded me of the importance of having an outlet. You never know what someone else is going through, and my goal is to ensure freestyle is a safe, supportive, family unit where each member feels valued and included.
This year I organised a comp send-off with goodie bags, karaoke, sign painting, and old routines. It was a fun way to de-stress before a busy month. My goal this year was to make sure everyone felt prepared and could enjoy comps, and we smashed it! You can see from the vids how much fun we had, especially during Wildcard at Lboro when the whole arena was dancing 🤩 I’d love to work with the committee to bring more wholesome events like this to the whole society this upcoming year!!
being a part of freestyle was the best decision i made when joining Leeds. i’ve had so much fun over the past 2 years dancing with you all and it would be an honour to spend my last year as VP taking the stage with you all one last time 🫶🏼
