Hi, I'm Erin - I'm 20 years old and currently a 2nd year BA Journalism student. As a journalist, I'm passionate about news and radio (it's basically my job already!) As Head of News, I would bring fun and friendly characteristics to the role, making all new members in the next academic year feel welcome. I've been a member of the News Team at LSR for 2 years now so know how everything works. As Head of News, I would champion the existing elements of the News Team (such as Common Ground, News of The Week, 'The Latest' Podcast, etc) - but I would also introduce some brand new elements that would really bring the team's social media presence to an even higher standard, like a daily Insta story to be posted on the @thisislsr_news account called 'News Wrap' where one team member each day will post a quick and snappy round-up of that day's headlines, similar to Newsbeat on BBCR1! Additionally, I would introduce 'The BIG News Wrap' - a longer summary of the week's biggest headlines, made by the News of The Week teams. I would also plan many more socials, especially around the beginning of semesters 1 and 2, so that everyone can get to know each other well before working together!

My name is James, and I am running to be Head of News at Leeds Student Radio for the 2026/27 academic year.

I have been a member of LSR for my entire time at university, working across many different areas of LSR – daytime, news, breakfast, and even launching my own show!

LSR has one of the best parts of my experience at the University of Leeds – meeting some of my closest friends through the society. I want to make sure that everyone has the same positive experience as a member of LSR that I have had.

I have spent this year working in Westminster as part of my year in industry, meaning I have developed a strong level of national and local politics. I would be a present and supportive Head of News, aiming to be approachable for members of the LSR news team who need help.

I truly believe that the best ideas come from the members and would ensure that the voice of each member of the news team carries equal weight. Whilst being a supportive Head of News, I would give members the independence to allow their creativity to thrive.

I want to work with my counterpart to ensure that we give the best platform for student journalism to thrive at LSR News.

I would love to be head of news because I truly have a passion for and enjoy being a part of the news team and having a hand in delivering news to fellow students. Being a head of news would allow me to have a direct hand in advocating for and doing things I believe can push the news team forward.
I’m a part of both the podcast and a radio show, so I know, quite well, how things work and know the things we excel at as well as where improvements can be made.

Being a newcomer, this academic year, means I know what it’s like to step into something as developed and as (slightly) complex as LSR and the news team.

I want to help members fulfil their full potential and enjoy their time on the news team. I want to ensure that members have a stress free, fun, informative and inclusive experience.

Hi, I’m Aliza, and I’m running for Head of News because I believe news shouldn’t feel like a chore to listen to, it should be something students choose to engage with.

As a current News Editor at The Gryphon, I’ve gained experience in writing, editing, and sourcing stories, and figuring out how to make them interesting (even when the topic may not be). Through my journalism degree, I’ve also developed radio skills like scripting and editing content for broadcast, so I know how to make news work on air.

I’ve also been part of LSR through Chai, Chaat & Gupshup, which won Best Podcast at the LSR Winter Awards (still not over that), and I’m proud to have earned the title of LSR’s “LinkedIn warrior”.

If elected, I want to make LSR News more accessible, creative, and student- focused. I also want to create a team environment where everyone feels comfortable getting involved whether they’re experienced or completely new. I’m organised, creative, and full of ideas, and I’d love the chance to help take LSR News to the next level.

After being part of the news team in my first year, I've gained valuable experience and friendships. Not only that, but I've worked on content that has educated me on topics I would have been none the wiser on, for example the many different options for funding student tuitions that aren't commonly spoken about. I have thought about this role and what it is I could bring to being a Head of News and I've come up with a few ideas!

Students around campus deserve to have ways of easily accessing news. I know how daunting it can be to turn the TV on or see TikToks about how the world seems like it's falling apart, but this cannot be a deterrent for people. I'd like to create weekly TikToks and Reels based around our bulletins of the week, but in ways that are designed to educate students, not scare them.

Students with their own show that may be discussing something to do with current affairs, would be offered the chance to team up with and collaborate with the news team in whatever way they'd like, if they wish to. This is perfect for getting to know more people with an interest in the same things as you, or even someone with opposite views!

Networking is a huge thing for students as we all know, so I'd like to work with other universities' media societies and create discussions on Common Ground or hold interviews for The Latest. This gives both the students of Leeds and students of other media societies across the UK to collaborate and get experience in a fun and creative way!

Aside from these ideas I'd like to implement, I would just love the opportunity to be one of your Head of News' next year. I love working in a team and socialising with people, but that just be because I'm quite the yapper! I'm always willing to help, and believe me I had to reach out to the current Heads of News on a few occasions this year, so I understand that it can be overwhelming jumping into something new.

Hi, my name is Anna and I'm running to be Head of News for next year. I've been a part of the news team for the past 2 years, including doing bulletins and News of the Week and am super dedicated to both LSR and News. With this role I'd look to cover more local events, increase socials coverage and focus on having both highly detailed and well informed content but also increasing accessibility for people starting to follow the news for the first time at Uni. I would also keep up with the work done this year to increase use of Podcasts and the collabs with the Sports team.
