Hi I’m Jess, a first year English Literature with History of Art student and I would love for the opportunity to be the Social Secretary of the Art Society. Over the past couple of years, the restrictions enforced by covid has made me itching to get out and do something, anything. Now that we are going back to some sense of normality, I am eager to organise and lead social events such as trips to galleries and drawing socials at Wapentake. Having been my Sixth Form’s Head of School Council, a prefect and editor of its newspaper, I am extremely confident in my organisation and planning skills as I am experienced in sending emails, submitting forms and interpreting and present succinct information. I believe that this has made me well equipped at ensuring that social events will go forth smoothly without difficulty. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Life Drawing/General Assistance Secretary; working closely with the current committee has been extremely fun, and I feel comfortable working with a new team to continue this enthusiastic energy. Since leaving Sixth Form, I have continued my love and passion for everything creative by drawing life models in biro and marker, painting portraits in watercolour, gouache and acrylic and by exploring new mediums such as clay and photoshop. I hope by leading artsy socials with the Event Secretaries, every member can experience the same passion in experimenting with new mediums. Not only do I hope to nurture the artistic spirit, but I hope to bring others together as a closer community of artists, as I believe the expressive aspects of art will help others make new friends via new experiences. My friendly and approachable demeanour has proven especially useful while volunteering with Leeds Rotaract Club, and when working at various takeaways as I have been able to communicate ideas clearly, politely and enthusiastically with customers and the local community. With this same enthusiasm, I want to contribute to ArtSoc’s role as an enjoyable pleasure away from the hectic nature of University.
If I were to be Social Secretary, I would love to establish new relationships with other societies by running collaborative events such as a fundraising draw in the park, sustainable sculpting and even pictorial pub quizzes. To connect voices and lives through art would be a responsibility that I would gladly take. Heyy my name is Yasmin Ramadan and I’ll be going into my second year in Leeds. I am an international student from Egypt with an extensive art background and this is why I want to apply for the role of the Social Secretary. I’ve been the Event Secretary this year so you might have seen me around at some events! I loved working with the Art Society and believe that I can now take on a bigger role within the society. I love all sorts of art related things. Doing Art A-level, I was able to experiment with different styles and mediums. My main focus is on portrait paintings with either watercolour or oil and I would really like to organise an oil painting event in the future. Constantly juggling between abstract and realistic styles I find it extremely fun to do both! I also do a bit of nail art and love expressing myself by experimenting with patterns and colours. I believe that it's very important to try out different art styles and mediums to find out what you enjoy the most and would love to nurture this by organising a variety of events to allow members to experience and find their niche. I was elected to be an Art prefect for two consecutive years. This position allowed me to develop my creative and managing skills because I was responsible for organising activities such as art exhibitions and talent shows. Later I was also chosen for the role of the Head Girl. My responsibilities included liaising with a variety of stakeholders like students, teachers and parents as well as leading a group of prefects. This is why I have experience of being in leadership and I can manage responsibility and my time successfully. Living in three countries I was able to familiarize myself with different cultures and traditions. I would love to be able to celebrate the multinationalism of Leeds by organizing a variety of events inspired by traditional art styles from places all over the world! Knowing three languages I believe that my international background can help other international students in ArtSoc feel more comfortable:) I am very excited about the role and have a lot of ideas about collaborations with other societies and creative socials. This year was a blast for Art Society, and I am really looking forward to having the same energy for the next year!
