Hey, my name is Ella Rose and I am Weightlifting Captain for 2022/23. Being a part of the committee has been rewarding for me and I am keen to increase my involvement.

The society not only helps people to achieve their strength goals but is a supportive and welcoming environment facilitating members to meet like-minded people for social events and friendship.

I am organised and have strong administrative skills as well as being proactive, demonstrating this by helping in the liaison with Leeds University Union in order to successfully organise and run a 24-hour row which raised over £1500 for charity.
I am committed to the role, showing this by organising an internal competition and the external competition for us to send a squad to BUCs.

I am interested in the position of secretary as I’m keen to engage existing members in the society, increase membership by appealing to those who are interested and perhaps need a little encouragement to participate in Weightlifting or Powerlifting. The coached training sessions offer a welcoming and positive environment and are a place for lifters of all abilities – although I am rather biased towards weightlifting!

I have loved every moment of this year, making some amazing friends, and going to some cool places such as Nottingham Strong and Pixel Bar - which had some interesting cocktails. One time, we went to Flight Club, Spoons, then of course, Mischief where I was oh so incredibly drunk but had such a brilliant time with everyone. I would like all the members to have as much fun as I have had this year – even if you do have some of the worst hangovers.

The socials and the training are what makes us a close group of friends and I feel this is what makes us the strongest club on campus. My goal is for us to gain even more members next year and become even stronger.

Hi guys, I’m running for the role of Secretary next year to give something back to Barbell – I joined this year and have been so grateful for the club. It’s given me a lot more confidence within powerlifting and has allowed me to meet some wonderful people! The club is a supportive environment and has helped a lot of great lifters really thrive, so I want to make sure that everything Barbell does is up to standard so everyone can get the best possible experience, and we can continue absolutely smashing it at comps. As someone who was new to the club this year, I know how important it is to make everyone feel welcome – regardless of ability – so this would really be a focus for me whilst I am on committee. Working with other committee members to continue arranging activity-based socials would be a great way to encourage everyone to get to know each other (that could be paintballing - nothing says ‘nice to meet you’ like taking a paintball to the face). I would also work with the powerlifting and weightlifting captains to arrange beginners training sessions to improve confidence and allow people who are new to the society to meet. I also think it's super important that everyone is getting up to date and clear info – on everything from socials to competitions – to ensure the smooth running of the club and make the best atmosphere for everyone. I am incredibly organised (you should see my Google Calendar) so would have no problem managing deadlines related to elections, LUU compliance work and sending info out on time. Getting everything running smoothly behind the scenes means we can focus on training and providing great socials. So, vote for me to receive snazzy emails and together we can make Barbell an even stronger club!
