Hi, my name’s Flora and I’m running for treasurer for 2023/24. I am a final year Nutrition undergrad & doing a master’s in agriculture next year. I’ve been a member of Barbell for three years (back before it was called Barbell!) and I’ve seen it grow into a much bigger society over the last couple of years. I’m chatty and social, love being in the gym, and you might even catch me on a rare night out this year! I’ve turned my worry about money into great budgeting skills and I use Excel for almost everything – from weekly budgeting and workouts to holidays and house hunting. Taking over from the great work this year, I will continue to balance the books to make room for improved socials and potential growth for new equipment. I’m trustworthy and look forward to working with the rest of the committee to save money without missing out on important experiences.

Hi all, my name’s Tom (or Tommy to most of you), I’m a second year medical student who will be going into my third year with the society next year, and hoping it’ll be my first on the committee. Since first year Barbell has been a cornerstone of my time at Leeds; I’ve met so many fantastic people already and am looking forward to meeting even more. One of my best experiences of the last year has been competing in Northern Unis, as well as the charity row and some of the brilliant socials, and so barbell is a club that has enhanced my uni experience massively. Therefore, I’m hoping to give something back to the society within the committee, and I feel that my skills best suit me for a position as treasurer.
I have experience in managing finances, not just from my student loan, but also in helping family members with budgeting on a personal and commercial level. Plus, I can’t be any worse than Rishi Sunak, and they left him in charge of the finances of a whole country. I am proficient in excel, which I’m told is the main skill required, and got an A* in my maths a-level (even if I didn’t have to sit the actual exam) so I’ve got the numbers side of things covered. Most importantly, though, I’m committed to the society and will work as hard as possible to ensure that every member is able to enjoy their time with us.
As treasurer, I would look to build on the excellent work of last year’s committee, and be on the lookout for further sponsorship opportunities for competitions, such as those offered to us at Northern Unis 2023. I will communicate efficiently with the rest of the committee (especially the social secs) to provide the finances required in the best way possible and ensure the smooth running of the society.
Therefore, I feel that I will make an excellent treasurer for the society, and welcome any questions you have. Also, I used a semicolon so that’s got to be worth a vote or two. See you all at the ball!
