Hello BPM Committee and Members! My name is Liza and I'm applying for the Radio Manager position on the BPM committee. At the moment, I'm about to finish my placement year and am looking forward to returning to Leeds to finish my English Literature BA (as well as enjoy my last year bouncing around campus and Hyde Park!).

I’ve been interested in radio at Leeds since my first term when I applied for the Electronic music show on LSR. Discovering and sharing both new and older electronic releases was so rewarding and I loved being able to put people onto what my co-hosts and myself were listening to. I applied four semesters in a row in my first and second years and managed to keep hosting which was amazing; I feel like my ability to research and curate a variety of genres for listeners has benefitted my own music exploration too!

During my placement year, I followed my love for electronic radio and was very lucky to work part time at SWU FM as an assistant producer. While there, I scratched up on my Adobe Audition skills to help podcast and edit both live and pre-recorded shows, as well as using Photoshop to promote SWU’s roster of artists via Instagram.

With my experience at both LSR and SWU, I feel well equipped and enthusiastic to help assist BPM’s radio tangent. I would love to use my editing skills to podcast and upload BPM radio shows to another platform like SoundCloud, maybe adding some kind of BPM jingle within each log. This would also give BPM radio artists the opportunity to easily store and distribute their podcasted shows. I also thought maybe members, if they recorded their live sets from events, could share podcasted versions via the radio and similarly BPM’s SoundCloud.

I’d like to make the BPM x LSR partnership as inclusive and accessible as possible to all abilities of mixing. Given this, I thought it would be a great idea to host beginner BPM DJs who mix similar genres within a radio slot. This would give them the chance to “play out” in some form before a live set, easing them into the atmosphere of playing to an audience. I also thought that the BPM radio shows could be used to spotlight members’ own events, and even to promote Leeds-based electronic event collectives. It’d be really cool to establish a link between BPM’s radio division and events; I believe organising an event promotion mix slot would garner hype for both BPM and the events themselves.

Lastly, I would like to encourage more listener-generated radio aspects, using the radio’s audience to guide some segments of shows. Obviously, the radio artists would control the content to an extent but I thought it would be fun and engaging to have track or genre input from those who listen in.

I am sorry if that is quite a long read but I am just very keen to help out as BPM’s radio manager! It would mean a lot and I think I have the skills as well as the drive to take the BPM x LSR connection to the next level. Thank you! Liza :)
