Main responsibilities: Welfare Secretaries are responsible for looking after the team as a whole, both mentally and physically. In a week to week basis, this involves checking up on injured players and seeing if they need help regarding booking physio etc, looking out at socials (and/or) keeping an eye on the group chat on Wednesday nights to make sure everyone is okay. Also, it is important to just keep your eye on everyone generally, sometimes people may be going through difficulties and to just keep yourself accessible to everyone and being a friendly face. Finally, the main ‘official’ responsibilities involve at the beginning of the year attending any LUU welfare talks to ensure you, and the society, are well equipped to be able to help players out and where necessary direct that in the right direction.

As a person: Being welfare secretary it is most important that you are an approachable, friendly person that people are happy to talk to as well as confident to approach yourself to players that may not know you (freshers can find it intimidating to get to know the senior players). This means that at games and training you in general make conversation and keeping yourself available on Snapchat to players.

Forward Looking: There are many areas that this area can be expanded on, and can also develop your skills etc. In terms of the role and being more proactive, there is definitely scope to get some talks going with the team as a whole, for example getting talks about mental health, physical fitness, nutritional advice etc. Also, there is potential to begin looking at physical fitness with perhaps group gym sessions and a team combine style session.

On a personal level, welfare secretary provides you with proof to future employers that you have the skills of approachability, trustworthiness and responsible. Also, being welfare secretary provides a springboard if you wanted to pursue a senior committee level position in the year after, having proven yourself and your skills.
