At its core, the president’s role revolves around effective decision-making and clear communication. You serve as the central point of connection between the coaches, players, and the university union, while also maintaining oversight across all areas of the club. Whether it’s putting together team sheets or deciding on kit orders, the decisions you make have a direct and lasting impact. It’s a role unlike any other within the club. I was fortunate to work alongside an excellent committee this year, and one of the most important skills you’ll need is the ability to delegate, while also being willing to step into tasks that may feel outside your comfort zone or initially seem daunting.
Given the level of responsibility, the role can be demanding, with messages and queries coming through at all times of the day. Being adaptable and well-organised is essential. Throughout the year, there are many key events, deadlines, and responsibilities to keep on top of, and naturally, not everything will go perfectly. However, by working closely with your top three, coaches, and the wider committee the position becomes much more manageable.
One piece of advice Adam gave me last year was that there is no single “correct” way to run the club or approach being president. With that in mind, I would strongly encourage anyone who feels capable to put themselves forward. While stressful at times this is a very rewarding role but is not a position you can do without 100% commitment.
