Hey guys! I’m Jessica, an International Business student going into my third year at Leeds! You may not recognise my name, as I have been on placement this year, but my ugly deadlifting face has somehow managed to appear on our socials and banners more times than I would have liked, so you may recognise my face!


I joined the Barbell Society as a scrawny first year who had no idea what they were doing, and was too scared to go to any of the socials or training sessions. However, over the 2 years I have now been part of Barbell, it’s pushed me to not only become physically stronger, but more confident in myself. The society is made up of so many amazing people, who are always supportive, friendly and willing to give you a hand, no matter what level of lifting you are at.

I now compete in powerlifting in the U69s (niceeee), and can’t wait to sign up for some exciting comps this year.

I am running for secretary this year as I want to help improve the society that means so much to me (plus would be great to have something to add to my CV other than that I can bench 85kgs).
After my placement year, at a large company, I am now well equipped to churn out countless emails to the union, to keep the society organised and on top of admin.

For me, the most important part about the Barbell society is making people newer to lifting feel comfortable, and valued within the group. I’d love to organise more events, such as powerlifting mock meets and intro to lifting sessions, to help them feel more confident. At competitions, it’s so important to have people there cheering you on and supporting you. Another aspect I would like to improve is organising trips to competitions were fellow members are taking part.
