Hey everyone!
I’m Kate, a third-year student heading into my fourth (and final) year! I’m friendly, chatty, always down for meeting new people and having fun! Having been in various societies, I discovered that Barbell Soc truly does offer a bit of everything both in the gym and with socials – and I hope to truly put my focus into this society and its events as social secretary!

I have loved all the active socials we have enjoyed the past year, and I want to expand on this while keeping the popular mischief nights and pub socials. With everyone having such a busy calendar (as a joint-honours student, I totally sympathise!!) I plan to make it easier for everyone to participate by keeping the social calendar organised, providing advance notice and having committee members present so that you’ll always have a familiar face at events; whether it’s your first social or you are a regular participant, you’ll always feel welcomed! I’ve made it my mission to communicate with our members and I want to make sure we can all share our opinions so that as a committee we can constantly be taking in feedback and improving! Whether that be ideas for socials that you are passionate about (climbing, hiking, skating etc) or how we can be more inclusive.

This society has been such a wonderful place to meet people who all share the passion for lifting, and I intend to host socials that will give members the opportunity to get to know each other better so we all make lasting friendships that go outside the society. This will include group trips, house parties and Otley Runs (we can reach the final pub, I believe in us)!

An area I have really felt like our society was lacking in is in the offers and discounts we provide. I have sourced these for various events in my previous jobs and have been in contact with committee members of other societies to learn how to improve this, therefore I feel I am in the position to be able to make this happen for Barbell Society as well. I will research businesses that are popular with our members and reach out to negotiate offers so that your membership goes that extra mile in improving student life.

Wellbeing and inclusion are highly important to me; our society has members from all walks of life, and I am passionate about everyone feeling welcome. As a mature student in my second attempt at university, I understand how isolating and intimidating university life can be. Our society should be a safe place for everyone and I will always be open for our members to approach whether that is for advice, recommendations or just someone to rant to.

Hey Guys!
Some of you might see me as a familiar face, but I’ve only really been to socials this year!
I love going to the gym and have come very far, and am going to start training sessions next year.
I am a typical uni student, I love the social side to everything and would love to help out in organizing really fun socials for us all next year.
I am a very approachable and easy going, positive person, and would take every opinion into account in making sure there are many socials that cater for everyone’s preferences.
I would commit myself to the shared role, and would love to see Barbell continue to be an amazing, empowering society.
