Hey there, I’m Fran and I’m currently a member of the News Team at LSR! This year has been so much fun and I’ve loved getting stuck into covering important stories from all around the world. I would really love to keep up the incredible atmosphere we have at LSR so more and more people can see how great we are :)

Why vote for me? I won ‘Most Outstanding Contribution’ at the recent Winter Awards and I have experience with aspects of the News Team including bulletins, News of the Week, and The Latest podcast. I would love to keep up coverage of stories that matter to us and make space to voice opinions that may not be covered in mainstream news. I would like to regularly the news Instagram to keep everyone in the loop and also upload bulletins from the week on there. And news socials would be cute – we can all grab a drink or do something non-alcoholic like crafts!

Also, I’d love to collaborate with other teams, such as the Daytime team, to cover events such as International Women’s Day and Black History Month. I’d love to delve into covering some protests too and get interviews. To me, news is about understanding in simple, accessible terms the world that we live in today and holding those in power to account.

I love LSR so much and would love to work with the News Team maintain the immaculate vibes we have as a station! I feel really excited for next year and all the exciting projects round the corner, and I would love to give back to the station by getting involved with the ‘behind the scenes’ of the station.

My name is Magen Kelly, and I am a first year Politics student. I have been a member of Leeds Student Radio since I joined the university in September, and I have loved every minute of my first year! The support that the current Heads of News have given to me this year has encouraged me to run for Head of News, as I want to play a bigger role in the society that has helped make my first year at Leeds so special.

I started at LSR on the News Podcast team, ‘The Latest’, where I co-presented the first podcast of the year, covering the controversies in the Conservative Party. Seeing this project from its early planning stages to the final record really made me find my love for radio, and this has continued throughout the year. A particular highlight was being nominated for a News Award in the LSR Winter Awards. In Semester 2, I was given the opportunity to become a presenter on the ‘News of the Week’ show. This has been a great chance for me to share my views on a range of topics, from Politics to Eurovision and all in between. I will always find a reason to incorporate my love for Taylor Swift and Netflix dramas into every show! Having to deal with the chaos that can sometimes come from live radio has also been a massive learning curve, and one I’m sure will continue over the next few years!

Before starting at Leeds, I completed my National Council for the Training of Journalists Level 3 Qualification. This helped me to develop my skills in newsgathering, recording and editing audio, and constructing news stories to reach a target audience. I feel that this qualification will help me to be successful in the position of Head of News, as I would be able to transfer the competencies that I have developed into real life practice within the radio station.

I pride myself on my organisational and leadership skills, and this is something I believe I would be able to contribute to the Head of News position. Making sure that everything runs smoothly and to plan is something I would endeavour to make happen. However, I know that live radio can sometimes lead to unexpected challenges, and I would work well under pressure to resolve these issues quickly.

The current collaborative culture which is present within the News team is something which I feel would be important to continue if I was elected. To support this, I would organise regular meetings, for the different segments of the News Team, along with a gathering once a semester for the whole News group. This would allow us to share ideas about how to improve our shows and make our part of the society better. Arranging more socials for the News team is something else that I am passionate about, in order for us to forge stronger working relationships.

The idea of becoming a Head of News for LSR is something that really excites me. I would put all of my effort into making the News division of LSR an extremely high-quality listening experience, as well as enjoyable to be a part of for all of its members.

I am an organised and creative person who has been told my whole life that I talk too much, so naturally radio was a perfect fit! This year I had an own show called 'Life Lessons with Liv and Laura' and after seeing how amazing and supportive the LSR committee was, I knew I wanted to nominate myself to be a bigger part of it. On top of loving the radio, I have experience in media production both in education and work experience which has helped me develop the skills to manage a creative team. As Head of News I am committed to being an active member in the society; going to socials, posting on the Facebook group, being organised in responding to queries from the News team and managing the running of the news shows. I cannot wait to be part of LSR for another year and would love to be your Head of News.
