Over the past year, joining and taking part in LSR has honestly been the highlight of my university experience so far. I find myself spending more time in the studio, than doing my actual course (don't tell my tutors!) In all seriousness, I would be honoured to be your Head of Sport for this year.
LSR has been vital to my learning journey, as well as my personal development as a journalist. One of my proudest moments working with the radio has to be creating and producing my podcast, Drive Thru! After a lot of planning and hard work, the vision was finally executed. I would love to be part of that for other people, by allowing their creative vision to flourish and grow, the same way in which LSR aided mine to do so.
It would be amazing to see more interaction between the radio members, and the head of sport as a whole! I would love to be more active in the community, and really engage with each individual show.
As head of sport, I would continue to work on what Theo has accomplished this year, by celebrating the mixture of strong characters that really make the shows special! As well as ensuring that every voice is heard.
I believe that due to my working position, as a staff member at Headingley Stadium, that this would be invaluable in gaining some amazing opportunites for next years Varsity. Such as further live coverage, interview opportunities, and perhaps a little bit of 'behind the scenes.' Varsity is the heart and soul of the sport calendar, and it will only continue to grow!
In addition to this, as a freelance journalist also, I am very accompanied to the world of media! I have experience in dealing with professional companies, PR, and knowing how to conduct professionalism in instances such as interview, therefore would be more than able to pass on forms of my knowledge to the rest of the team!
Being a woman in sport media, can be quite frankly, terrifying. When first beginning the radio, let alone sports reporting, I felt every emotion at once. One of my key goals for 2023/2024 as your Head of Sport, is to ensure that female representation is one of the spotlight factors of change. Women's sport is on the rise, and is only set to get better! From WSeries racing, to womens football and rugby league, it would be amazing to work alongside other societies to ensure the best opportunities for our radio team.
As well as this, in general, I feel that sport as a topic on the radio deserves much more recognition! Currently, only a couple of regular sports shows feature on LSR, (not counting solo shows @BoxBoxBox, I love you 3) and I feel that it truly is time for us to expand! I would love to be at the head of this, and make sure that everyones voices are heard.
Aside from this, my main goals for this year are as follows! :)
-Raise Voices: Really focus on spreading voices of importance. From minority groups, marganalised genders, or simply those who may find it a little difficult to get their voices heard. No one should ever feel overshadowed.
-More Sport Socials: Encourage more sport related activities! Trips to local matches, go-karting, and meetups to watch sporting events! Both boozy and sober socials for all.
-Regular Live Coverage: Coverage of more UOL sporting events, such as tournaments. As well as local sport, such as non league football, rugby, dance, ice hockey, whatever takes your fancy!
-Interviews+Society Outreach: Mingle with other sporting societies and teams across UOL! Increasing exclusive opportunities, and highlighting the sporting community.
Thankyou, and I hope to see you next as your Head of Sport!!!
