Hi everyone! My name is Chibunmam Okpechi and I am a first year international law student in the 3 year LLB programme. As an active member of the law society, I noticed that the focus of the events in the Law school is on career opportunities and workshops, which is great, but much work need to be done to ensure inclusivity of all students ranging from international students, women, LGBT+, and people of different races and backgrounds.

For this reason, I am applying for the post of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Secretary for the Law society. I can think of no better candidate than myself. Because of my passion for equality, I have carried out different projects such as the ‘Feed the Nation’ program which provided the underprivileged with necessities like food, water, clothes, and even textbooks, notes, and stationaries.

In addition, I was an active member of the Champion Ladies Program in my community alongside my mother, the founder, since 2017 which aims to empower underprivileged women.

Along side with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion being a passion of mine, I am also qualified to take up the role. I worked as a Finance Intern at Total Energies where I read and summarized documents that outlined the financial operations of the company, completed general administration tasks, proactively helping colleagues where needed, prioritized tasks to meet deadlines and manage workflow, and prepared internal presentations on the activities carried out by the departments of the company.

I also worked at the Ken Ahia and Associates firm as a legal intern, performing the role of studying case files to appreciate the practice of law, proofread documents, assisted with preparation for trials, hearings and depositions, following directions from lawyers, created organized filing system for legal documentation and accompany lawyers when representing their client.

I also have leadership qualities with my experience as the vice president of the debate team in high school, labour Prefect and sports assistant in high school winning a total of 14 medals in annual track and field competitions and 6 medals in annual swimming competitions.

My Vision
1. Liaise and develop events with the Women in Leadership society and the Women Breaking Barriers to provide students with the opportunity to network, socialise and grow with other women that are advanced int the legal field.

2. Organise a cultural dinner to provide a platform for people of different cultural backgrounds to confidently display their culture. With activities displaying cultural dressing, food, music etc.

3. Work with the LGBT+ Society to create a welcoming and liberating space for all queer law students.

4. Organise workshops and work with law firms and organisations, exploring how people of different backgrounds could excel in the legal field.
