Hello everyone! I’m Hannah Amiri, a 3rd year LLB Law with French Law student, and aspiring Barrister. I remember from about the age of 8 telling my mum I wanted to be a barrister so I could “nosey into other people’s business”, and from there grew my passion for law. From doing law A-level at college, I participated in numerous extra-curricular activities including mock trial competitions in front of real Judges at Manchester Crown Court. Knowing I was an aspiring barrister, I strongly remember my law teacher telling me I need to participate in mooting at university. I am passionate that mooting is a unique legal skill, invaluable to any legal CV and essential to aspiring barristers. Having mooting experience on your CV really enhances your legal opportunities moving forwards by helping build a repertoire of law specific experience. This is how I knew from college that I wanted to be an active mooter at university. I believe that my mooting experience thus far speaks for itself. Making it to the final of a Senior mooting competition as the only first year, with no mooting experience, is something I am really proud of- (the mooting sec later admitted she only placed me in the senior competition to make up numbers and didn’t expect me to do so well!). Furthermore, I already have insight and direct experience into running mooting in Leeds LawSoc having spent a year on the sub-committee. I was approached to join the sub-committee due to my repertoire of skills that I would love to bring to the table as your Mooting Secretary for 2023/24. I would like to think of myself as a friendly and approachable mentor whilst having exceptional experience and skill within this area. I am an incredibly passionate mooter and have always got stuck into any mooting problem I’ve been presented with. I believe it’s such a specific skill to be able to dig through case laws to bend the law to fit with the argument you have been given to represent. Even if the law doesn’t seem on your side, you have to make it work. This is the art of mooting. Building your arguments and back up arguments to bulletproof your ground of appeal whilst anticipating and disproving arguments to the contrary is a skill I feel I have really enhanced and would love to instil in next year’s mooters.
