Hi everyone! My name is Ahmad Tahir, and I am a first-year student in a 3-year LLB program at the University of Leeds. I am from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and I am 20 years old. I am running for the position of Vice-President for Communications in 2023/2024. This is my first time living away from home like most of you and I want to represent you and help provide you with an experience you will never forget for the rest of your lives. I believe communication is one of my biggest strengths and I would like to help you while using that ability.
Why vote for me? I believe I am the best candidate for this role due to my past work experiences and due to my abilities honed through rigorous attempts to be the best version of myself. I am extremely dedicated and passionate about this role. I am approachable and dependable which enables me to be an excellent communicator. I have worked as a planning and coordinator at IAS to organize events that included multiple teams, people, and vendors. This experience allowed me to hone my organizational and time management skills which allowed me to provide the best support needed. I have worked at Ernst & Young LLP which is a taxation firm as a receptionist where I had to deal with clients and organize meetings and recorded the agenda and meeting minutes. I also have experience working at a senior retirement residence where communication with the elderly can be difficult and I understand the importance of communicating effectively and it was something that I outshined at.
My vision for this position is something that is needed by everyone. I plan on communicating with law firms and chambers to provide new opportunities for students to acquire work experience crucial to their development as a lawyer. I want to work to provide students with experience working at international law firms which is pivotal for our development. I plan on introducing schemes for students to be able to communicate with each other and make new friends and learn from each other. I understand that being at university can sometimes be difficult and I want to work with students and professors to alleviate that stress. I want to communicate with firms and chambers to provide students with opportunities to network with them to increase their portfolios. Hello, my name is Philip and I’m a second-year law student here at Leeds. So, why elect me to be your LawSoc Vice-President for Communications? I believe that I am well-qualified for the role. Last year I co-lead a student division of a NGO and facilitated the division’s application to LUU to become an official student society. This means that I have experience working directly with the LUU. I also organised the student division’s interviews, formation event and various other student initiatives. This means that I have a working knowledge of the internal mechanisms of a student society, which I will be able to use to enhance the cohesion of the LawSoc 2023 committee.

LawSoc has personally offered countless opportunities to me throughout the last two years of my degree. For example, in first-year I competed in LawSoc’s negotiation competition and attended several social events making a number of friends in the process. My most memorable event this year was getting the opportunity to dine with staff of my dream law firm at the Careers Dinner. The opportunity to get involved with activities of this kind while simultaneously developing skills necessary for a career in law is the value which LawSoc provides to students such as myself. I wish to contribute my skills and experience that I have accrued over the last two years to LawSoc.

So, what will I do for you? As seen above I have made 5 primary pledges.

1. I will use my influence within the committee to further the value offered to students by LawSoc. I am aware that for many, LawSoc’s membership and events can be expensive; therefore, I will be committed to extracting as much value for you as possible.
2. I plan to advocate for an increase of pro-bono and research initiatives offered by LawSoc. Last year, I volunteered at Citizens Advice as part of a School of Law Community Engagement initiative which has led me to recognise the importance of developing soft-skills through practical work.
3. This role will require me to conduct administrative work to ensure the inner-mechanisms of LawSoc run smoothly. I plan to conduct my work diligently and effectively because I recognise that this will allow other committee members to perform at their best.
4. I will advocate for more non-alcoholic social events and opportunities. Although many of us enjoy a drink (myself included), I recognise that there are many students who may not or who prefer other social activities. I am committed to ensuring that LawSoc continues to host these types of events.
5. I plan to increase the number of prominent speakers hosted by LawSoc to allow students wide-access to interesting experiences and ideas (such as the Lady Hale event hosted recently).

Hi everyone, my name is Louisa and I would love to be your Vice-President for Communications next year. Law society has been a huge part of my first year experience at Leeds, providing countless career insights as well as amazing chances to make friends, meet like-minded people and play sports socially. It would be an honour to be part of providing that experience for others.

Some highlights for me have been playing on the law netball team, attending talks by esteemed professionals such as Lady Hale and Victoria Prentis as well as the commercial awareness workshop. I would strive to provide equally as welcoming and fascinating opportunities for law society members next year in addition to my idea of a mentor scheme. As an organised, ambitious and friendly individual I believe I would be a great addition to the law society committee deserving of the role of Vice-President for Communications. Hello everyone, my name is rishi, currently in my second year. With the aim of creating a much better system and vision, I am running to be your Vice President. I will share information about my vision and how I plan to achieve it.

As an international student, the Law Society has been integral in making me feel at home in Leeds. Through countless socials I have made formed many of my friendships and become a part of a strong community of like-minded peers. I hope by running for the role of Vice-President for Communications, I can continue to uphold and facilitate the society that has been such a massive part of my first year.

As former President of my 6th form’s Law Society, I am no stranger to the administrative tasks which are associated with this role, from major decision making, to simply organising calendars, I have already performed many of the tasks required on a smaller scale. Further, I hope to use my invaluable networking skills I gained through co-founding my 6th form’s “Interacts” (networking) club to liaise with sponsors and secure funding.

As an approachable, dedicated, and creative individual, I feel as though I would be an asset to the society both in terms of introducing new ideas, such as implementing an “Acess2Law” scheme (and many more as seen on my poster), and carrying out the expected duties to a high standard.

MANIFESTO for Vice-President for Communications: Sara Menhal Jarboue

The University of Leeds Law Society has always proven to be a society of high moral standing, one that is politically aware, and incredibly considerate with members that have created an amazing culture within the society. I have been an enthusiast of the society since my time at Leeds International Study Centre, but this interest has further been aroused since seeing the society in action and interacting with it’s members. This role will encourage me to further hone certain skills such as public speaking, being a team player, and many other skills that are undoubtedly of increasing importance when it comes to the reality of having a career in law. The society has proven itself to be one that leads by example, which is something that I thrive to do as an individual and would simply be honoured to be a part of. The values that the society displays are all key attributes vital to success in one’s career, and a true testament to the society’s exceptional work ethic is the fact that they have won the Best Academic Society Award. Alongside this award, the Inclusivity Award speaks volumes on the ethics being practiced within the society, and as a young woman of Syrian origins, this happens to be of crucial importance to me and would simply be delighted to be a part of a society that creates real change.

Having had been the student representative all 4 years of my high school, as well as during my time in foundation year at Leeds International Study Centre, I have considerable experience in time management and networking, which will be of vital importance when it comes to the role of Vice President for Communications. Upon light of the recent and very unfortunate events in Syria, I was able to organise 36 buses, alongside the help of my parents, in aid of people from my home town, As-Suwayda. These buses had resources in the form of food, medical kits, clothing, and tents for shelter. I was able to organise this and collect enough donations within the span of 4 days and have also recently proposed an itinerary to the mayor of my hometown which includes building a new power plant, which I am currently collecting donations for and should hopefully go ahead as planned within the next 2 years. I have been involved in various similar events, as well as organising them myself. These events have taught me how to act in the face of difficult and unyielding situations, as well as how to come up with innovative solutions to particularly difficult circumstances. I was also basketball captain of my high school varsity team, which taught me how to lead a group of highly driven and capable individuals, alongside learning how to split responsibilities within a group, which I am sure is an important part of being Vice President for Communications. Since this role entails shouldering many important responsibilities, I feel as though I am equipped to face these challenges as my past experiences have taught me how to thrive under pressure, as well as how to network with people of different backgrounds.
