Hello everyone! My name is Lauren Stoddart and I am in my first year of the 2 year LLB program here at The University of Leeds. I am originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am currently one of the First Year Reps on the Law Society and I am very excited about the opportunity to remain on the society for another year. I am running for the position of Law Soc President 2023/2024. Prior to coming to Leeds I received a Bachelor of Arts degree with an honors in Sociology and a minor in psychology from Mount Allison University. I always knew I wanted to study law and coming to Leeds has allowed me to pursue that passion while experiencing another part of the world. Why am I running? I have decided to run for this role because being on the committee as one of the first year reps has been such a rewarding experience and I want to continue to have an impact on making everyone on the society enjoy their law school experience. I feel as though this role will allow for me to contribute to providing experiences and opportunities for other law students that will help them to enjoy their time at Leeds while also preparing for their future careers. Kat and Ben have done an amazing job and have been role models for me in this position and I hope to take what I’ve learned from them and develop into having a successful year next year!
Why vote for me? I believe I am well suited for this position because of some of my particular attributes, some of my past experience, and my overall desire to see the law society succeed.
A major part of this role is gathering sponsorships and fostering relationships with law firms. I believe I can do this well because of my past experience working in a professional services client facing environment at an Executive Recruiting firm where I was required to maintain relationships with clients and candidates. In this role, I was the first point of contact when clients wanted to work with us. Along with the communication and coordination that this role required, it also required a sense of professionalism that I believe will benefit me when communicating with law firms, the law school, and the union.
This role includes a lot of organization when chairing meetings, compiling the weekly newsletter, staying on track with upcoming events etc. I believe that the administrative and time management skills that I developed while receiving my previous degree, in my administrative roles, as well as in my management roles will help me to excel in this area of the role.
Another aspect of this role requires me to support the other committee members in whatever they need while maintaining an oversight of all society activity. I think that this is best done by working as a team. I want to help my fellow committee members in any way that I can in order to make their jobs as enjoyable as possible. My previous experience on numerous university societies as well as managing the campus bar and other management experience I have had, has prepared me to do this in an effective way.
Lastly, I believe my dedication to the law society as well as my enthusiasm to make it the best it can be will help me in achieving success in this position.

Pillars. My Pillars are Development, Communication, and Inclusivity. Development: I want to make sure that the society as a whole is improving and developing each year and I want to make sure that we continue to try our best to make every year better than the last. I also want individuals to feel as though they have developed from being on the society through the many opportunities that we offer. Communication: I want you to feel informed about events and opportunities. I want the society to feel as though there is an open line of communication to the committee. I want you to feel as though we are advocating for your experience and I want your voices to be heard. I also want to be a friendly face around campus as well as make you all feel as though you can reach out to me and that you are supported. Inclusivity: I want the Leeds Law Society to be a place where everyone feels included and valued for who they are. I will make sure that I am fostering that type of environment and upholding that there is no tolerance for any disrespect.
